n/a engine with a 1.8 zetec bottom end and a cvh head? we tried a cvh water pump but it leaves a gap there!

my friend got the car on a cheap, not sure what bottom end it is? the old water pump had a plate behind the back of it but 2 of the bottom holes where you bolt it up on the pump were cut off? as far as i know its a cvh tensioner, looked the same as my rs turbo, we also test tried the cambelt but it had a lot of slack on it as well

also regarding timing, there is a little knob on the crank pulley but nothing on the bottom end casing to line it up to?
