Well as i am no mapper my definition is not what i am doin to my car which is using a base map and changing the ignition/fuelling at certain points to get the best out of my engine according to the tools i am using...also setting boost map up from scratch etc etc.
So my actual defintition is someone who Mike just described,having the ability to write a map from scratch...which i could not do and feel alot of tuners could not do.
Are you talking about that actual software that allows you to input the figures? The bit you actually See as your "mapping software"
Or are you talking about knowing what fuel and spark figures to put in the control map itself that contains only zeros?
IE: If you put in;
12degrees idle, 30degrees part load, 15 degrees low boost 14 degrees high boost for a spark base, then put 2ms idle, 3ms cruise, 9 ms low boost 17 ms high boost, + 42% fuel adder for around 20Deg C retarding down to 5% adder at around 63 deg c to get a fuel map base. Sort your phasing degrees out for cranking with around 4 rpm increasing split points and then you know a 9:1 engine with 300CC injectors at 3.5bar should at least start and run?
If thats what you mean, i could probably do that in my sleep, in fact, ive had greater and more complex ideas than the above for lambda control in my sleeping hours and implemented them during the day
If its the software side your talking about, im not a mapper either according to your definition
**Ive decided to add a disclaimer to say teh above figures are an example and if your new map melts your engine, its not my fault...roflol

Phil, i don't class Porkie as a nobody he is actually a good freind of mine.

Surely its the end result that you get for your car that matters, not if one specific person can design the map from the start, tweak it, build the engine and keep ya happy.
I think if someone is using another person to help and the result is better, why does it matter?
