Default Camera Guru's

Hi Guys l have a Nikon D40 and would like to buy some new lenses for my up coming Honeymoon/Holiday,

I would like a wide angle and a good long distance lense at present l have the 18-55mm and 75-200mm lense's but am not to sure what to go for next, also l am a little confused do you have to buy AF-S lense or can it be AF lenses as there seems to be some price difference, l was always told AF-S

Thanks

Mike

Hi Mike,

You're correct in saying that for ease of use you'll need AF-S lenses .
As the D40 body has no internal focus motor.
When buying an extra lens like 12-24 or 10-22 wide angle lens, make sure it has a AF-motor. Nikon has AF-S, Sigma it's called HSM.
However, you still can use other lenses, but then you need to AF manually by hand.
An wide angle like the nikon AF-S 12-24 f4 is a top lens , but has a hefty price tag ( even secondhand ). Sigma's 10-22 and Tokina's 12-24 are the cheaper alternatives, but I think you'll have to manually focus.
As for a tele zoom, the nikon AF-S 75-300 VR is a nice lens on an budget, gives you more range then the 75-200 . If you still want more zoom, the sigma 50-500 is an option, but don't know if this is an HSM lens .

The sigma 10-20mm has the HSM, it's very good and an excellent lens for the price i would strongly recommend it for your wide angle.

I would consider buying either a nice prime lens, although you'll be spending about Ł500 for one with AF-S, or upgrade your kit lens to something better.

It comes down to what you want to shoot really, with a bit more info i can recommend better.

ok, i'll give you a cheaper option and a more expensive option then. I'm of the opinion that good lenses are the most important part of photography, and decent DSLR will perform good results, but amazing pics come from truly great glass.

I would go for the Nikon 14-24mm f2.8 as the wide angle:
http://www.warehouseexpress.com/prod...px?sku=1023050
Not cheap at just over Ł1k but it's a stunning lens and if you decide to upgrade your DSLR body in the future to a full frame sensor this lens is compatable.

I'd then recommend the Nikon 70-200mm VR f2.8:
http://www.warehouseexpress.com/prod...aspx?sku=12906
Again, it costs over Ł1k but it's considered to be one of the best, and the VR (vibration reduction) will help lots when shooting motorsport.

For the cheaper options i'd still recommend the Sigma 10-20mm:
http://www.warehouseexpress.com/prod...px?sku=1007711
great lens i have used before, the auto focus is amazingly fast, and results are great. Just do some test whots when you get it as there have been some rare reports of versions of this lens that had soft corners but any shop will replace this.

for the telephoto i'd recommend the Nikon 70-300mm VR f4.5-5.6:
http://www.warehouseexpress.com/prod...px?sku=1014102
Good price, and it has VR again which will help with the motorsport shooting.

I always recommend warehouse express as their prices are very good (worth checking if you can find cheaper though, you never know) and they do 12months interest free on any order over a few hundred pounds.

I hope thats of some help.

If you can budget for it, get the Nikon 18-200 VR - it's an amazing lens! It'd be a wonderful match.. getting a SB-400 flash would be a nice addition too

I got the sigma 10-22 mate. Its such a good lens. I love it for taking pictures.

I also got the Nikon 70-300mm VR f4.5-5.6 last time I was in Gib. I like it for taking pictures but you might not need that sort of zoom for your honeymoon or wedding pictures.

@ the track , you'll be thankfull for every mm zoom you can get.
Imho the 18-200 could be enough, but the 75 300 give you 100mm more zoom.
And sometimes that could make the difference.

And with the AF-S 70-200 f2.8 VR you could use the nikon AFS 1.4/1.7/2.0x converters.
Which you can't use on the 18-200 or 75-300 lens.
