It's called optimising the image - basically, a JPEG is a compressed file, but a lot of the data can be removed without being noticable to the human eye, and results in a smaller file which takes up less disk space and is quicker to load.

I use Photoshop or Fireworks (image editing programs) or you can post it here / PM it to me (with the required size limits).

That'll be an animated GIF - they don't optimise as nicely as JPEGS unfortunately, so as they are optimised, the image becomes noticably crappier (unless you reduce the image dimensions).

But for example sake, this is how it comes out:
Two variations, but both had to have frames removed and the sig' shrunk in size, and the results are poor I'm afraid.
GIF optimisation basically makes the file size smaller by removing colours - works well for logos and flat areas of colour, but not great for photo's.

They're both under the file size limit, but sometimes when you upload to a photo hosting service, a few bytes get added and so go over the limit.
See if you can link directly to the images I put up (right click>properties and copy and paste the URL).

Billabong, not meaning to teach my granny to suck eggs or anything, but one of the problems with maria's image is that each frame still contains the whole lefthand portion of the image, even though only the right righthand size changes.
So make it into two images, with the still portion in one, and the framed portion in the other, and it should get smaller which means you can keep the quality higher with the allotted space

GIFs only 'make bytes' for changed data also....to the best of my memory.

You could have the sig' as a single JPEG image - you'd just need to pick which of the four main frames you prefer.

FWIW I agree, but as I used to do a fair few sig's years ago, I always made sure they followed the rules (set a good example and all that, lol).
I'm sure you understood, but to make it clear to anyone else, I meant one physical image file - both our sig's have multiple images but in one file, so they're ok.
