sub-500quid super economical lightweight smoker
as title.
dont want it to be too slow, but as i have no willpower at all it needs to be a car thats economical even with foot welded to the floor for 50miles at a time down the motorway.
i dont care what it is or looks like really, diesel sounds a good plan tho.
immediate thoughts were a Mk1 Clio diesel (my old dears got one, 1.9D, uses fook all fuel and not too slow, ideal) or AX diesel (as they look better and even lighter), as light means quick and decent economy.
anyone got any suggestions?

Escort mk5/6 TD's were economical and have turbo lag - which makes them feel like they have some power when it comes in lol. Easier to fix/work on than the french stuff imo.

106 XND.
Get an M reg or older so it doesnt need a cat (one less thing that might need replacing )
I got one, 60 mpg, fits through tiny gaps, don't give a fuck if I ding it. Everything cheap for them. My cambelt just gone twang and with a reconditioned head I'm looking at £250 all together to fix it. Sweeet.

i must admit for a monkey my personal thing would be german, prob a golf diesel, old passat diesel etc, and if i was budgeting that much it would run on oil filtered additived oil.
wife had a focus
petrol prices and all that i went out and bought her a 02 plate laguna, for 1500 quid ok its renault but very well specced, stunning alloys, half leather cd, air, sat nav etc, 1.9 dci 6 speed does 55 mpg in 6th gear at 70 mph, and if i say so a well nice looking car
i run it on alternative fuel, tank full costs 25 quid and i get 600 miles if im lucky enough
fook the goverment retaliate be wise, have aplay toy by all means but wife kids family smoking use ya head

And it will only run on veg oil (new or used) if it has the correct pump, Ford used about 3 different pumps on the Endura and its only the Bosch one that can withstand the extra viscosity of the oil, the Lucas ones will last about 5 miles
The french diesels usually run on owt, I'd be tempted with one of them, either 1.5 and save some tax or the 1.9 and have a bit more poke.

Citroen AX diesels are great on economy, infact they are record holders!
Here is a quote I just found:
This came as no surprise, since it's predecessor the [Citroen AX] in diesel form held the record for the best fuel economy achieved in a production car, 103 mpg (2.7l/100km) - a record that still stands today.

Stuart Bladon established the world record distance for production car economy, covering 112.01 miles on a single gallon of diesel fuel with a Citroën AX 14DTR.

Fast Ford snapper
I ran a Pug 106 1.5D for a good few months.
Flat out it would do 90+MPH and return near 500 miles to a tank, 400 miles on veg. Never really let me down and was quite chuckable too.... if you keep momentum up

the only thing is, everyone wants diesels for under a grand these days, they get snapped up quick, so alot of the ones left on the market are the lowest of the low.
you might find one for £300-400, but at mot time it will need £500-£1000 spent! and the old clatterbangs like that wont like doing alot of miles. remember even when french/italian motors are new-ish, bits fall off, hinges come undone etc

Stav - http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/1992-CITROEN-A...QQcmdZViewItem thats a 1.4 one (1360cc engine) which I think is the one that set the mpg record.
This technology came from the PSA Peugeot-Citroën / Renault / French government ECO 2000 project. In 1989 a naturally aspirated diesel AX, using the 1360 cc all aluminium alloy TUD engine, managed a figure of 2.7 L/100 km (87 mpg–U.S. / 105 mpg–imp), totalling over 1,000 miles (1,609 km) from Dover to Barcelona. This was the longest ever distance travelled on 10 imp gal (45.5 L/12.0 US gal) of fuel and earned it a place in the Guinness Book of Records as the most economical production car.

The engines ARE different. I cant remember the exact differences off the top of my head, but its the 1.4 you want.
