Default Carbs question

As Im only a young pup, I have not much experience with these stoneage things.

Down draught and side draught, are the only differences the intake angle?

What sizes run what power? 40's, 45's, 48's, 50's.

Im toying with the idea of putting them on an XE engine Im building, either that or continue with the R1 carbs idea. I only lack a manifold and dizzy for the R1's setup.

I have an R1 pump which is internally regulated so it keeps floats full at all times. And the dizzy is adjustable advance/retard. The carbs run a manual choke set up too. Carbs jetted to 1.8mm too.

No need for sensors of any description so what would management control?

You are not going to get the best without mappable ignition.

Im not overly fussed about spending fortunes on it, its a budget build purely to chuck in a car and have some fun.

Anyway for the time being I only want to know the basic ins and outs of the different carbs.

You'd probably want 45's on an XE engine as 40's would be the limiting factor. 45's and a suitable cam choice should see close to 200bhp..
