Default Compressor and paint

Hi Chums, Firstly Can anyone recommend a good compressor. Basically want one capable of running a few air tools and putting some paint on the underneath of my car without running out of puff every two minutes. This would need to be single phase as it will be for home garage use.

Secondly, I have used a spray gun in anger many moons ago when I did some training courses with Standox but for the life of me I cant remember how to mix paints etc. Basically what does anyone recommend for painting the underneath of a car?. I have seen the resto threads with lads using 2pac but isnt it all water based nowdays which isnt as hard wearing?. Any painting tips would be appreciated..

Cheers for the help

Neil

you can get 2k paint, imo if your painting at home and have no experiance painting, 2k is the way to go, cellulose paint will be hard for you to get a good finish on, and you can get a good finish from 2k out of the gun,

but if your only painting the underside its up to you.

I would prefer to use 2k. I remember mixing the stuff up and checking viscosity etc but as far as I recall it was very complicated.. is there easy way of mixing or can you buy it ready to go of you know what i mean.

well i just painted a pug 106 at home for a mate, in black gloss, get some mixing cups the same size as the capacity of the pot on your gun, for every 2 parts of paint you add 1 part of hardener.
most paints come with the mixing ration on the pot,

i used a large jam jar to mix the paint when i painted my van. put a strip of masking tape on the side, pour water in, in the apropiat amounts and mark the tape with a pen. pour the water out & dry the jam jar then pour the paint hardner & thinners in up to the apropiat lines & stir well. worked well for me. as said 2 parts paint 1 part hardner & 10% thinners

If you are using 2K paint then you really need an air fed mask, to run this and a good gun you will need a compressor that can produce around 20CFM.

hi there, some air tools need 90 psi to run. I have a 14 cfm compressor 150 litre air tank and this copes with most jobs in my workshop and its single phase. the only tool that suffers from use with my one is a sanding da otherwise this will do what you need. hope this answers you question.

machine mart has all you need. compressors guns tools. my advice is buy a good compressor better looking at it than looking for it. 2pak is great stuff but a bit deadly.primers are 4-1 paint-hardner plus tinners maybe 20%. paint is 2-1 plus 10% tinners.

Biggest air pump on a single phase supply will be about 14cfm or 18 at a push on a 3 hp motor. This is with a 16 amp supply and not a 3 pin 13 amp plug BTW.

If you're going to lash on a bit of paint underneath and not be too bothered about a mint finish then a 14cfm will do. You'll just need to be in a well ventilated area as an air fed face mask will sap the air supply. The spray guns are usuall high volume air consumption too.

Air tools will be fine on a 14cfm pump.

when you buy your paint ask for a data sheet on the paint your buying as not all 2k paints are 2to1 ive been painting vehicles for 18 years now at work our solid 2k is 3 to 1 ratio the 2k i use at home is 2 to 1 also try and blag a mixing stick when you buy ur paint makes paint a lot easyer to mix

tbh if you are going to be using it only a few times a year, an air fed mask aint needed,
