E39 M5 owners

Everyone always says how agile the M5 is for it's size, and it really is. The M3 might stay with it to 60mph, but from then on its the M5 that would start pulling away. It's the mid range torque of this car that really makes it what it is. I've driven an E36 M3 and it's a great car, but once you've driven the M5, then if they cost the same price then you'd choose the M5 every time.

Too many posts.. I need a life!!
Horses for courses..... I've got the m3 for twatting about in, and also have the Use of a 530d Sport....
The 5er Is so much more refined, much better ride too, And no way near as barge like as you would think!! ... I would say there is not much diffrence in power between the 530d and e36 m3, just the m3 you have to ring its neck!
I have had a play with an evo coupe in my vert and there was very little in it... I have also played with an m5 and left me for dead and I caught him unaware!
A M3 evo vs m5 - Not a chance in hell
I like the m3, Because Im young and love verts, But I can see a 530d Sport or M5 Being next on the list...

i have had an m5 and loved it-the torque is addictive.also good fun on a track and unbelievably capable for the size of it!
i sold it to buy an e46 m3-huge mistake.
got it back eventually but couldnt warrant driving a 12k car on trackdays,so i now have an e36 m3 trackcar-great fun!
best all round car-m5 by a country mile.e39 5 series are great cars anyway but the daddy m5 really is something else.

Really? not my experience. I've owned 3.0, 3.2, M coupe and driven 2 E39 M5s, I would NOT say FAR quicker. Awesome car the E39 and deserves the ultimate saloon badge, but the E36 is IMO one of THE most under rated cars ever. Seems everyone and their dog shits on it. Loved them both and it will always remind me of why I got out of RS ownership

Do you really think, that BMW would have built an M5 that was slower that the M3 that was still in production.........! ! ! ! !
The M5 is definately the faster accelerating car + top speed.

I think so too, I was just backing up his comment with my opinion that its a fair old feat of engineering to get such a bigger, heavier, quieter, more feature packed luxurious car to go as fast, let alone faster!

This is also correct, the M5 is faster on acceleration, just may be a bit slower on corners due to the weight, but a good driver wont let this be a problem, hence Sabeen did a sub 8.20 @ the Ring in an E39 M5.
I have driven both and I would choose the M5 anyday, apart from the fact that the M3's are so common.

i think the m5 would be quicker in a real world situation as the extra torque would see it off into the distance. what i did was a standing start 1/4 mile with a full bore start and there was nothing in it to 100mph,which took 14 seconds by the way,if any of you e39 m5 drivers want to find a quiet bit of road and time 0-100?
maybe the guy couldn;t drive? who knows?

I know 2 people that have bought the E60 V10 M5 and both were saddened and even though the speed is emmence, the E39 was an all round better car.
HOWEVER I still want an E60 before I am 30 and I am 29 on my next birthday so not long to wait.

Im liking the idea of an E39 M5 as my "nice" car. Shitty old Transit for work and getting oily etc and my Cossie as an out and out toy.
Hmmmmmm, its looking good
