For all you Y reg owners and later there is a petition going against the change in road tax to come in during March next year. It comes as Chancellor Alistair Darling prepares to meet Labour MPs concerned about plans to increase road tax on older, more polluting vehicles.
Your road tax will go up from £210 to £440 next year - I'm at a loss how this is going to help the environment, it's ludicrous. However I have no problem against the tax on new cars, at least people can choose then.
Forty-two MPs have signed a Commons motion asking the government to reconsider.

And this one to lower duty tax on fuel.....

I dont think that it's a definate that every car will go from £210 to £440 mate
It's only if you have a car with bad emmisions
I will sign it though as I still dont agree with the fact that I should be punished for buying a newer safer car that is better for the environment compared to the pre 2001 cars and get punished 4 years down the road!!

Have completed the petition but wonder if these actually get taken into account?
Especially as Golden Brown states that he is listening to the people.....god help us if he wasn't listening

Correct me if I'm wrong, but it wasn't compulsory to put the CO2 emissions on the registration document of anything registered before March 2001.
I suppose they could get the emissions read outs from an MOT? And we all know how easy they are to arrange favourably.

Nothing to do with the environment - its just another stealth tax.
Theres currently nothing to stop you buying a pre 1973 car and fitting a big sooty V8 that eats ozone for breaky and spits out more carbon than a pencil factory.
You've got to love gordy's flawed logic.

PassionFord Post Whore!!
My reading on my DC5 is 234 so already in the higher bracket. £220 for 6 months - fookin ripoff!! Was registered after March 2007 (even though it is a 2001 car) so in the same bracket as the new new cars etc.... Its cheaper to fookin tax a 2 year old Ferrari Enzo - wheres the logic!!!!!!!

Done as this has no environmental benefit what so ever.
Also, not only does it hit you in the wallet on direct tax, it also affects the resale value of the car.......

Can you show me where you got this information from please? Would love to have a read through it.

that's completely different to what they use for the tax ratings which is influenced by all sorts of things like aerodynamics, weight, rolling resistance etc and requires a very specific (and expensive) test to measure. there's no way that will be done for old vehicles, far too expensive and time consuming.

that's not to say that a blanket higher rate will not be brought in based on age and engine size or something though - much like a lot of europe.
usually, cosworths will end up 'relatively well off' in that case as it will be judged as a 2000cc engine - but happens to have the performance of a much bigger one due to the turbo

I daresay it'll happen like that one day but it's not been mentioned here yet.
The good thing about all this uncertainty is that we're getting customers in trying to get out of cars from 2001 onwards to get into newer stuff

whats to stop them from taxing older cars even more because they aren't cat coverter'd?
bunch of cunts want any excuse to tax us into the ground for whatever they think they can get away with
and with the fuel protests going on in london (and the coppers who are driving alongside (another bunch of cunts) issuing tickets to them truckers who are driving less than 40 mph) it's going to take a country wide gridlock before brown decides he's going to tax us for something else
you pay tax on the car to be allowed to put it on the road
you pay 2 lots of tax to fuel it
you pay tax on the insurance you need to take out to keep it legal
how much does this all cost the "average" driver?

Can you tell me where it says about cars older than 2001 please? I'm not being picky or fussy, if there ARE plans to raise taxes on cars registered before 2001 [over and above budget changes] I genuinely want to read about it.
There's no blinkers here, but maybe some glasses needed elsewhere

20K+ Super Poster.
It pisses me off as it takes POLLUTION to create these new cars, whereas running an older car well maintained may be cleaner than all the new emissions from the newer car when you take into accout the emissions in creating it as well.
The bit about where they get the data from is a farce, my xr4i was on LPG and put out 0.0015 CO at mot, but I still paid more tax than anewer car with more pollution, as the gove won't recognise individual values, which could be gained from mot data on an individual basis.
Signed, but won't change a thing IMO.
