Can a Direct Debit/standing order not come out on a Sunday or a bank holiday?

I'm sure we've all seen it. Direct debit comes out the same day every month, unless its a sunday or bank holiday. Do bank workers have any actual input in the process? I wouldn;t have thought so. So why cant it just come out as normal?

As this is usually a time for system maintenance within banking systems as far as I am aware.

Routers/SW Upgrades and patches would usually be applied on non working days.

Like the train track maintenance i guess you would say.

It's to do with batch processing. Banks still run on batch. Batches run daily. With hundreds of millions of accounts it's not so easy just to change it. There are also political reasons for leaving it as-is. Some groups of banks have faster transfer times.
