Loads, big dent in the wallet. I did my company car last year, new engine, tank, pipes the lot. if he had not started it, then jus drain the tank, but once started its fooooooked.

First thing to do of course, is check that he HAS done what you think and put the diesel in.
Assuming he has, then next port of call is to totally empty the tank, then fill it with petrol, run the fuel pump for a few mins (connect 12v straight to it) to wash through the remaing diesel, then empty it again.
Then fill with petrol and hopefully it will be ok.
Very rare for any actual engine damage to occur.

i'm guessing not only when he started it after filling, but also when it had died, he tried to get it to turn over a few times?
i think its time to get the hose, spanners and a bucket.
then a lot more spanners and the like for an engine rip down.
hopefully its nothing to do with wrong fuel!

no need for any engine work, just drain the tank as stated above and flush the fuel pump, fill it with petrol and it should be fine, cant believe anyone could put diesel in a cossie.

You are NOT going to cause ANY engine damage to a petrol engine by running it on diesel, as said just flush, you will NOT get all of it out as diesel is a oil and therefore is very sticky, so it will no doubt smoke a bit, but be ok after few tanks fulls.
Just drain tank through the large pipe between the pump and tank, the take off RETURN after you have put some PETROL back in put into a container, and run a seperate 12v to the pump, it will soon flush out ost of the diesel.
I accidentally put petrol in a diesel escort, no cat/ecu or anything and had to drive for 150 miles afterwards, let it get low enough to run out, changed the filter, refiiled with diesel ZERO DAMAGE, even had the pump checked, as heard lot sof horror stories about attacking seals etc, the DIESEL PUMP speialist I used said it was all bollocks about damaging fuel components, and indeed was in my case.

If he drops a MATCH in the tank to test whether DIESEL or PETROL, he will know even sooner!!
As said up until the smaller UNLEADED only size all were the same.

guy on a forum i used to use bought a brand new diesel focus, at the dealership, they put unleaded into it, he got a few miles down the road and it conked out - further inspection showed that the solvent petrol had completely ruined the pump (normally lubricated by the oily diesel fuel), sending shards of metal into the engine, completely writing off the whole engine.
I think its more of a problem on newer direct injection diesel engines than it is with older diesels.
If it turns out he has put diesel in his cos, just do as tabetha says
