Smile Heating / pluming question,

Can any heating engineers help me out here, i'm looking to replace a standard double radiator with a vertical one, But i wanted to know if there was a way of find out the heat output in BTU's of the old unit, as there is so much price difference as the BTU's go up.

I don't want to spend a load on a rad that will over power the room but again i don't want to get one that isn't good enough.

Also if anyone knows a good place to buy from that would be great just looked in b&q and on the net so far.

Will be very greatfull of any help,

cheers steve.

Yes its got fins in the middle between the two parts but only attached to the front part.

It looks quite old, its NOT one of the ones with the grill on top over the gap between the two parts.

As a rough guess, its around 4500 BTU's that youve got, if your going for a fancy pancy decortive(sp) rad type thingy (as you can tell im not that keen on them) get one that has a greater BTU output than your original as some are more decortive(sp) than displacing the heat.

but i think because it's the highest rad in the house that's probably why

it doesn't affect the amount of heat generated, it's just that the top bit just never gets warm no matter what we do

and i know that warm water should rise and the ocld water should go to the bottom, but

Lack of flow, the system might need to be rebalanced. Try throttling down the other rads on the control valve end (about 1/2 to 3/4 of a turn can often be enough for rads that get good flowe) and opening up the control valve on the rad that isnt getting that hot, that should redirect flow to the rad.

Dojj

Sounds like the rad/s want balancing in a little better around the house,

If you slow down one of the rad valves (of the less hot rad) at one end does the rad get hotter at the top?, or if you turn off a couple of rads from around your house completely does the rad get hot now?

If so the system wants balancing in

Not really going for a decortive one, (but was looking at a 6 panelled one), old rad was under the window, but there's now french doors where that was so trying not to loose any more wall space decided a vertical one would fit in the corner of the room nicely, and as close to the pipes that are already there as i could possibly be.

Thanks for the advice steve,

Boilers are rated in KW now, but most rads are still rated in BTU, no reason why... sure it will change eventually though.
