And tbh Bellof was massively fast but he actually contributed massively to his own death by trying to go round the outside of Jacky at eau Rouge. The on board is on YouTube somewhere. I think Bell is quoted as saying "Nice guy, but mad in the head" (or somesuch)
Ooops I need to wash my eyes sometimes.

Well Bellof was a young guy, and it always will be a battle between Jacky's and Stefan's fans about that Spa'85 incident. Imo it was just a bad racing incident. Stefan had to pass Jacky soon in the race because Jacky had a better car, and Stefan took his chance, but well Ickx couldn't think Stefan would pass there. Have the whole race too on VHS (yes it still exist !) what a sad race it was.

Remember he still old the lap record on the Nordschleife in 6min 11.3sec which was astonishing because the weather was bad (barely over 3°C and cloudy). The young gun made history that 1983 last Nordschleife 1000km quali, even if he crashed in the race (near to death btw) while he was leading, imo he's still in the top3 of the best sportscar drivers of all the time..... with Jacky Ickx.

RIP Stefan...

The Spa crash was massive imo. At this time (as you can see on the video too) the runoff area is just non-existant. He went STRAIGHT into the barrier with no chance to survive. It was the same sort of accident Manfred Winkelhock had just few weeks before when he crashed straight into a concrete wall at Mosport in turn 2. This is why the 962 had then the pedal box behind the front wheels axle and why the monocoque was really renforced. The 956 was just too fragile for the speed it could reach.

If you're interested in this sort of stuff, I recommand you the book called "Porsche 956/962 The enduring champions" by Peter Morgan. I bought it and I don't regret it, an absolute gem !

Btw I have this poster in my room which is an original from 1983, not a reprint you can find on ebay. I don't know how many remain in this state :
