I don't know the ST24, but thermostat and or blocked rad would be the first things to look at I recon.

Is the noise all the time or what? Hot or cold? under load?

Had this problem on a 2.5 V6 ghia mondeo if its the same engine/design

Was water pump fooked, they have got plastic fins inside on standard ford 1's
and they crack around the spindle/shaft.
Ford wanted Ł80 odd for another shitty 1 with plastic fins
Local motor factors did 1 for Ł45 with metal fins
The pump is on the right hand side of engine as you look from front of car, being
run by a small belt off 1 of the cams

water pumps were common on v6 mondeos for "losing" the impeller blades from shaft of pump.
