a friend of mine has, and went to look at another last weekend but decided against it at the moment due to the high value of the euro to the pound at the moment.

easy for him as his partner is french, so didn't hear about any pitfalls.

This is the exact reason my dad is now strugling over in France (figeac).
He has done the same thing you sound like you want to do, bought a house cheap and is renovating as he goes.

If you require more info I can ask my dads wife if required

I can recommend a company called assetz finance (based in manchester - http://www.assetz.co.uk/), they can help with brokering mortgages, etc... saving you a lot of hassle, and also have a lot of advice on their web site.

Otherwise, there are french property magazines in WHSmiths which usually contain a fair bit of useful information.

Lastly, here are a few links you might want to follow:

http://www.angloinfo.com/
http://www.livingfrance.com/
http://britishexpats.com/

While I am half french and my other half is french, we've never bought a property there (yet !)
