Default Thinkin about getting a couple of huskies

Any body got or had a husky?
looking at a pair of 6 week old siberian pups (both bitches from same litter) full pedigree ank KC registered.

What are the good / bad pointers?
any advice?

Cheers,
Jim.

I love huskies but looking after them would be a nightmare i think. Can' t take them off the lead otherwise they're off. Others on here actually have them though.

i have a husky she's 16months now and she's fantastic with my daughter who's nearly 3. they are amazing pets but they are pack animals and they are very very dominant!, but maya is a bitch and she knows she's bottom of our pack and is absolutley brilliant. expect ya garden to get dug up and destroyed, expect ya house to be chewed up too oh and expect random howling at random hours pmsl oh and loads of walking lol i walk maya for up to 2 hours a day and she can still go more! they love it. but you can also get a trike thing you'll need to go on a husky website and get them to pull you it;s wicked for them but i think it's 3 dogs to one trike, not sure was ages ago when i looked into that.

meet maya

this was my previous husky storm who sadly had to be put down due to aggressiveness

I was thinking of getting an Alaskan Malamute or a German Shepherd but this dog intrigues me. I like the way the alaskans look and are very loving dogs but I also like the aggressiveness and protection factor that German Shepherds give and the fact that a German shepherd doesnt look totally different to an alaskan malamute. Alaskans as I've read have no aggressiveness nor protective instincts or fighting instincts. However, huskies, are they from a similar breed of dog? Are they protective over their area/pack members? Do they get on well with families?

the siberians are rubbish gaurd dogs lol but they are pack animals like the wolves, but as long as you let them know you're boss you will be abble to enjoy their amazing characteristics, oh and they're fantastic escape artists too lol but maya's wicked as a family dog she;s zara best mate. they're always together as you can see by that pic but it took alot of hard work to get her to understand zara is higher than her, and even now she will try and get higher than zara in the "pack" status but as long as i keep on top of it she;s fantastic.

there;s a bloke that goes down sandbanks beach and he has a husky and an actual wolf! and i dunno what the wolfs bred with must be a malamute as its massive! but it's 3/4 wolf or something. anyway! lol his husky is beautiful and he letsit off the lead but the wolf he doesnt and i said to him about how do u do that? because huskies are renowned for never returning! and he said that its taken him years and years or training and getting that dog to completely bow down to him so that he does return. but apparantly he has a few huskies and he is massive!! like propa fit and his dogs are his everything really. but you ask anyone and they say never let a husky off as its in their naTURE to run and they will just run and run and run and you'll never catch them and they'[ll run that far they'll get themselves lost lol

hmm sounds like too an advanced dog for me, the husky. dont think I could handle it and look after it properly. undecided about an alaskan or a german S though. again like the aggressiveness and strong nature of the german but love the look of alaskans and love that an alaskan gives.

i really like the look of the alaskans and their family love but still want the aggression, strength and protection of the G.S. Wonder if there are any alaskan German crosses?

andyc, how do you think the siberian cross will behave?

That's the last thing you should look for in a GSD... aggressiveness!

You need to look for one with a good out-going temperament.

i dont mean aggressive as in it wants to rip my hands off or anything but that has a good character with me and my family but isnt a pushover sort of dog that will greet intruders or unpleasant people with open arms

wel it could be a handful but my familys always had german shepards ,both breeds are very inteligent so as long as the time is spent training him im sure he will be ok.you see some people getting pulled all over the place by them and some that do everything there told so i believe its 90% down to the training

With a GSD it is definitely down to training during puppyhood. My GSD has a superb temperament and is extremely obedient and an excellent guard dog. Have never had to raise my voice to her and trained her by praise and reward.

One of the ski patrollers at my local ski resort has a husky and it’s a lovely dog. The dog runs up and down the mountain all day but the you cant help but laugh when you see the dog riding the chair lift.
