Default Back In The Day, What Cars Rivaled The Sierra Cosworth?

There can't have been many family cars when the Sierra Cosworth came out with the performance to match that of the Sierra? I was just wondering what, if any there was? I'm thinking it might of been in a league of it's own?

Cheers, Benni.

I remember reading about a comparison between a cossie sapph and a lotus carlton, in a classic type mag last year, fair comaprison I thought, considering the price difference!!
And the cossie is still the better car.

Lancia Delta HF Turbo, Lancia Thema 8:32 was a quick old tool as well, Fiat Croma (sp?) Turbo.
There wasn't much on par for the same price. I always remember wasting some yuppie in his 911 in my old 3 door,we called them whale tails then ha ha The look on his face was priceless

There was also the Subaru Legacy RS (import) & Legacy turbo. I had an integrale 16v back in the day and that wasn't a bad match for my mates 2 wheel drive sapph, the sapph had the edge though.

On acceleration yes but not top end. I've had the 12 & 24 valve ones and over a ton they pull really well to 150.

heres ours, one we made earlier, slightly tinkered with 220bhp, 250ft lb and 800kg

Funny enough i hasd the same issue at coombe last year, but we have fitted some comp brake 4 pots to it so hopefully a little more success this year

And the Beemers of that era looked fugly IMO. Considered to be an exec car, and out of reach of most people. (What were prices comparatively around then?).

Usual competitors were the E30 M3 (200bhp) and sometimes the 2.3-16 ( 185bhp) or 2.5-16 Mercedes 190 (200bhp)
Performance wise the Sierra went harder and braked better but the others often won on build, fit, finish, preferred handling etc. The German cars were more expensive though

Good ones, I've seen them also compared to Renault 21 Turbo, Lancia Thema 8.32, 325i Sport, Alfa 155Q4 ( or it might have been a V6) Audi 90 Quattro 20v, Audi Quattro, 911 Carrera, Carlton 3000Gsi 24v, Saab 9000 Turbo, Jaguar XJ6 and a few others.
That was when they were new back from 87-92 period

just been reading a bit on them and yes the comments folks make seem to be from 3rd gear on they are awesome,i've never seen one bar acceleration so you might be right.

i had a stage one chip in my saff when i first bought it and managed 140-145ish in 4th gear!i would love to see a carlton do that

A friend of my Dad's had an ex-police 827 and it was a cracking motor, well the Honda engine was good anyway. He chopped it in for an ex-police Senator 24v, they were nice cars.
