bit of a bump from the past, but ive just read this through again,

as ive spent a lot of time looking into engine management recently as its nearing crunch time, the car is nearly ready to return to the roads, and i want to know as much as possible about whats going to happen and different systems capabilities etc etc,

one thing ive been wondering is

off the shelf handheld odb2 flash map systems, what is it they exactly do, for example, over on the rsownersclub forum for the focus rs mk1 its popular to change the ECU base map from AF to the older AE software which apparently can only be done using fords WDS system, and then use a bluefin or dreamscience unit to load a flash file via the odb port,

so what i am wondering is is there only certain parameters that can be changed flashing via the odb2 port ie there are unchangeable protected areas that only the wds system is allowed access to,

just thought it might be a relevant question with the popularity of these handheld units,

cheers,

Andrew

i really enjoyed reading that, even if it did take most of the day!

one question i wondered, is in alot of maps before the turbo starts making positive boost you can run alot of ignition, basically to give the car better off boost power.

now they say by retarding the ignition you make the map more safe and also increase the the EGTs, higher EGTs have more energy and help to spool the turbo up.

So if you ran alot of retard could you make the turbo spool earlier to help with massive turbos, make your very low end a bit pants to drive but gave you a larger powerband as your turbo would be on song earlier.

Or am i talking complete rubbish and not picked up what people have said properly

you right - but you are only considering the enigne mapping and not how turbos work...

In short its more complicated than that... Look up boost threshold and lag on here
