mechanical knowledge
hi im new to all these technical terms im only 16 so reading as much as i can to try and broaden my technical knowledge. im not sure however what the difference is between a standard every day road car's gearbox and a dogbox. and then whats the difference between a quick shift and a sequential box? can anyone help

sequential is like a motorbike box, move lever one way for going up a gear, the other to go down a gear
quick shift is just an attachment to a standard h pattern box (ie what most manuals are) and it simply reduces the amount of travel between neutral and any gear.
dog box is mostly for racing and doesnt use synchros

dogbox can be clutchless yes, but they can also use a clutch.
quickshift uses or adapts a lever to go through the normal H pattern but with a shorter throw, making gear changes quicker.
Sequential just uses up (or down) movements as a single movement to change gears.
Sequential can be dog box or standard.

Dog Gearbox
Sequential Box
In these circles, when people refer to a 'quickshift', they are talking about a gearshift with a shorter throw than normal, so the gearstick travels less distance when changing gear.

buy an old heap of an old car, even an rs if u can stretch (is there an irony pun in that?) basic examlpe i picked up a tired S1 rst for £600 a few years back.
take it apart and do what ever level of resto you feel you can, trust me you will learn most things you need to know,
once you have the foundations and basic principles behind things you can normall use this knowledge to sus out new more chanlengine things you come across in ur mechanical past times
Nice to hear of young blood, keep the faith. cars cost you a fortune, break you heart, can kill you and be a burden. but so does everything else come to think of it!
