Unhappy White smoke/steam + Missfire = ?

Hi all, hoping someone can help!

Took 3 door to brunters today for some high speed fun.

Did a run, and on way back noticed temp gauge had gone up long way - usually sits on 1/4 or less, and had gone to half.

Popped bonnet and it had lost 90% of the coolant as the hose from the header had come lose. Tightened it up, refilled with water and all seemed fine and dandy.

Drove home VERY gently, and it is now missfiring throughout the rev range and plumes of white smoke/steam out of the back. But, according to temp gauge not getting hot, and there's still coolant in there.

Can anyone diagnose? Headgasket? Its got a cometic multi layer, done 400 miles ago.

I'm gutted.

Sounds like headgasket but you say it's not losing any water now?

Not that I can really see but its virtually pitch black now.

When the header emptied itself earlier the water in the engine bay did feel a bit oily (like line cleaner if you've ever worked in a pub!) but I thought that was prob anti-freeze.

TBH I'm shitting myself about how much this will cost to fix.

Cheers pal. Lloyd was little disaappointed with his times (which IMO were bloody fast!!) but the car stayed in one piece.

So, how likely is cracked head/bolck, and how do you tell?

Cheers pal. I'm hoping is just gasket, but if it is block/head, that's what it is. I knew I'd be stressing it to the max before I went today, and knew the risk.

How do I tell if its block/head or just the gasket?

As per Lloyd above, pull her apart and take a look....

Maybe stick some pics on here as well for our diagnosis (and for our morbid curiousity!)

Deffo worth a compression test or leak down test first though, to help you establish which cylinder will be the problem (saves looking all over the place if say no 3 is the only one affected)
