What date does a car need a CAT for MOT?

As title, what is the required date that my car has to have a CAT, i.e. it doesn't have one now, but it did when it was new, as it's originally a green top engine. Is it august 92 or something along those lines?

I don't think you 'need' a cat it's just the emission regs were tightened up so cats were used to lower emissions.
don't know the date though, sorry.
DVLA.gov.uk will probably tell you.

Yes there is a fixed, absolute manufacturing date that governs if you have to retain the Cat for MoT or can remove it. Can't remember the exact date, deffo in 91 or 92 though, my 91 Saff is okay I can remember that much.
EDIT: having done some Googling I think I may be wrong... whatever.

As said no car is legally required to have a CAT
However if you cant pass the emmisions tests relating to the year of manufacture for your car then you're gonna fail
MOT MAP anyone?

Thanks for your reply, I'm gonna have a look and see what the introduction date is, as obviously I imagine it would be different from late 91/early to 92 to late92 early 93 saphs.
There is no necessity to have a catalytic converter on any vehicle. However, your vehicle will be MOT Tested as if it had one and it is unlikely that it will pass the emissions part of the MOT without the cat. The reason being that the engine and the catalytic converter were all part of the same integral design to meet the emission requirements when the vehicle was manufactured

august 93 from what i can recall, and then there wa another one in 95 sometime
but if your engine is older than the cat laws it doens't need a cat
or if your car is older then it doesn't need a cat
so if you can proove that the engine you have fitted to your car didn't originally come with a cat then you don't need to pass the cat test, only the emissions test from the year the engine was manufactured

From what my local mot tester said to me it was every car that was registered on a K plate onwards had one fitted. It has to have one if it was manufactured after 01/01/1993 he said. He reckons he had an arguent with someone who had a k plate car but registered in 1993 about the whole issue.

I understand its august 92 for a cat.
But as said above its on the engine not the car. Although not many MOT guys are up for believing this! If you have a genuine pre 92 lump with factory stamps you can argue this. If you have a late cast 200 block etc your wasting your time it need to be a genuine registered block to argue this.
Didnt I hear that a closed loop lamda system properly set up (for MOT man) will pass a cat test anyway?
Its all a load of bollox as most cars in daily use never heat the cat up to work properly anyway with short journey etc.

Some cars aren't subject to it though, off the top of my head no sri nova needs a cat test, despite being K plated, and L reg metros don't need one.
My N plate never has one either....
