It was indeed a good day aside from noise issues.
Noise seems to be coming even more of a problem for us car enthusiasts and I dont think the situation is going to get much better.
We noise tested my skyline at dingys a few weeks before the event and it pulled 98db static at 4,500 rpm. I joined a queue for the static noise test at bedford and sat for 30mins only to get 103.9db static at exactly the same revs and got myself a red sticker (boo!).
After the drivers briefing I joined the queue to go out on the track and sat in it for a further 20mins until I got to the front - only to be told that I then needed to join a different queue to be drive by noise tested. So I then sat in another queue for 40mins until bedford staff were available - I asked the bedford staff if they felt slightly short numbered for the day - they agreed. Anyway - my car flew through the drive by tests and didn't trigger a noise meter for the entire day.
I did however, get black flagged for having to deal with power oversteer quite a lot It was my cars first outing since fitting all rose jointed suspension arms and coilovers and I now know the car is running WAY too much caster which makes it a real handful. Anyway, I got my hands slapped for it and I agreed I would try and curtail the oversteer in the faster 3rd 4th gear corners by going slower.
I then got black flagged again for what the marshalls referred to as 'drifting'. now IMHO power oversteer is NOT drifting. I was NOT purposely pitching the car sideways a good distance before the entry points of corners - or doing huge handbrake entires - I was purely dealing with the cars handling traits. So that was my day over.
Interestingly I never span once - never caused a track session to stop - never ended up on the grass. These days are all about experiencing your cars limits in a safe environment but yesterday was obviously not the case. Not to worry - I'd had a great day until that point and I now know I need to make some serious changes to my cars geometry to make it a bit less of a handful.
There were a few other incidents that I though should have been dealt with a bit more safely by the marshalls.
1. I was out with Lee in the Silver Clio and we had a spin just after the exit of the first chicane in the lap. His car would not start again so we were pretty much in the middle of the track facing fast oncoming traffic. A marshals van was approx 100m away from us on the grass directly facing us. It took them over 2 MINUTES to come and attend to the car. During this time there wasn't even a single wave of a yellow flag to at least make other drivers aware of the situation ahead. I've been doing track driving for 10+ years now and I've never seen it this bad.
2. Towards the end of the day the session was stopped by a red flag.. This was because the marshals were recovering a red fiesta from the back section of the circuit. There were no yellow or red flags, no flashing lights on the recovery vehicle. I was out in my brothers 205 and we slowed as soon as we saw them - on returning to the pits we got a telling off for not slowing down. There are 2 light boxes on the corners leading up to where the support vehicle was - SO TURN THEM ON and let us adhere to the safety procedures you outline in your own drivers breifings. Dont give drivers a bollocking when its your marshalls that have failed to do their jobs.
It was a great great day with some very well prepared cars

Deserves it that's for sure - he'd even considered getting an Evo as things were getting that desperate
Wanted to take him for a lap or 3 of the track, but he spent most of the time on the track in his own car!

That made for a interesting read. Its a bit mad that you got black flagged (and chucked off?) for "drifting" when others (including me) overcooked it enough to come off track, as you say surely its all about exploring the cars, and drivers limits?
Not sure what was going on with the flags, it was my red fiesta that was being recovered at the end of the day and the marshalls said they had yellow flagged the session but then decided to red flag as people were losing it on the corner due to maybe lifting off when they saw our car, and that people were still overtaking. One actually said to me that the session would not have been red flagged at all if people were not overtaking on the yellows, as the car was so far off the track. I can't comment myself, as I did not see any flags, I was not driving at the time and was busy getting the trailer over to the car to get it off track, just repeating what was said to me.

you'll like this one, 2 of my mates were told to leave... because they were weaving( like a formula 1 car when its warming its tyres) whilst driving along on a red flag at about 40mph.... what harm was that doing???? i think the marshalls were just being a bunch of hitlers!!!!

Had a really good weekend, Helen car done over 130 miles a not a problem
Did get chance to take it out and while on track Alex was behind trying to overtake with helen has his passenger, kept him away for a lap then on one of the bend totally fucked it up and Alex got passed
But that was the only time someone passed me so not bad for my second track day
A big thanks to Chip for going out with Helen most of the day and teaching her the track, racing line ect ect
Think maybe Castle Coombe will be next for us

Maybe they was not listening at the drivers meeting
We was all told NO overtaking on the bends only on the straights also to give about 3 car lengths to the car in front when coming up to the bends.
Cant remember how many times l saw the above rules being broken

I had a great time, sailed through the static test, but after seeing how people faired on track, I only dared run the car at 1.5 bar of boost, as I didn't want to meet the same fate as them. I then ran the car until I ran out of fuel (including the 20 litres spare I brought, the additional 15 I scrounged off Danny who left early) and an additional 25 litres I bought on site.
Had a few issues with oil (all my own fault ), where when checking the oil level, I didn't seat the dipstick home properly, so ended up slightly over-filling it and then still not seating it properly, having it blow out the dipstick, causing a James Bond smoke screen .
So from a personal level, I thoroughly enjoyed the day, but could understand people's frustrations. However, I realised after previous excursions at Bedford with the old engine (which would trip the noise meters if the boost went too high), that the way forward in the ever increasing clamp downs on noise, was a suitably quiet exhaust - hence my four silencer system ment that my day wasn't cut short .
Regarding the evening, Ben is more apologetic than an apologetic thing on apologetic day . I think the phrase mentioned was "I'm NEVER drinking again" . Suffice to say he was suffering both physically and mentally (the joys of being able to recount the entire evening to him ).

And as mentioned, she was the absolute model of trackday ettiquette, if everyone had such a determined attitude to both enjoy herself and make sure everyone else did, trackdays would be even better than they already are.
Great car too, I really enjoyed my little go in it, very predictable handling and pulled really well in the mid range, so came out of corners really well.
Im sure with a bit more practice, Helen will be putting in some credible lap times on some tracks by the end of this year, but fingers crossed she'll manage to keep her mind firmly on enjoying herself than the lap times anyway.
Oh, and a quick thanks to dingy for being so approachable and helpful when me and Helen needed to borrow a hammer to just dress the edge of her arch back a touch to clear the toyo's a bit better, its always nice when people are willing to help each other out

Then magically he was black flagged and off....marshal said he was not coming back on again....we assumed it was for his shocking driving mate so my apologies for the mistake and for the marshals telling us one thing and you another LOL

I had a MINT day in my silver Clio!!! Did Ł125 of fuel, well over 200miles on track, first session in the morning I was out for an hour non stop & managed to use nearly a full tank of juice in 80 odd miles - 14.5mpg sir!!! LOL!
Clio behaved impeccably apart from the odd flat battery embarrassment.....showed up most cars out there today, only 2 cars came past me the whole day - Mike R & a Ferrari both of which was on the back straight where I could only manage a 120mph top speed! LOL! I got past the Ferrari again in the afternoon tho on the bends - obviously I cared less about my car then he did about his!
Slicks held out very well, think I got the pressures more or less spot on - plenty more life left in them yet too!! Brakes hardly ever seemed to fade at all which was good!! Couple of minor on the spot spins due to unsettling the car a bit much....cant think why!!
Got held up by a couple of newbies.......(Helen ahem!! ) but the majority of people moved out the way for me which I appreciated.
Had a good tussle with Charlie in his Seat Leon a couple of times which I enjoyed alot!!
I got warned about the noise of my car, apparently I 'may' of tripped the noise meters a couple of times but as I was in bunches of cars at the time they couldnt tell it was me - they told me just to ease off as I went past the meters for the rest of the day which I did - not sure what was louder...my induction noise or the exhaust - think I have blown a few baffles out though during the course of the day - my static reading was 97.3db!!! I got black flagged once because one of the marshalls spotted one of my bonnet pins wasnt secure - fair play for that - well noticed...could of been interesting!!!
Disaster struck though at the end of the day - when I changed my wheels & realised I had NO front pads left - proper metal to metal & I forgot to get a set before I left on Friday so I decided to make the wise decision of staying over again & limped to Halfords yesterday morning were I bought some pads & changed em in 20mins in the car park! Unfortunately driving with em fucked has knackered the discs as well - ah well lesson learnt - always take spares!!! Then on the way home I went via Coventry to pop in & see a mate & coming off the M45 onto a dual carriageway one of my driveshafts decided to shit itself - think a CV joint has disintegrated...felt like the wheel was gonna fall off & the car was gonna shake itself to pieces so I came home in an RAC van with the Clio on a trailor behind us!
Ahwell.....3 weeks to get a few things fixed intime for Dono! LOL!
Hope everyone enjoyed their laps that I took em out on too!!!
Was a bummer for the people who had issues with noise & mechanical issues though.
If anyone has any pics of my car - Silver Clio DA51 XSH I'd love to see them!!
Roll on the next one!!
