Default SERIOUS - Help two journalists facing death penalty in Niger

I am posting this because one of the two journalists is loosely related to me.

You may or may not agree with their actions, and may feel they deserve to be sentenced, this is up to you and not up for discussion here - please.

However, if you feel that the right to accurate information needs journalists to bend the rules, or, disagree with the death penalty, then please read and sign the petition.

One of the journalists (the one I know), is half french/half english, here's a link to some information about him: http://www.jonhaylett.co.uk/index.php?id=21

This is a petition for all to sign, it's in french and english: http://pierre.thomas.alhassane.info/petition/

Note: You will receive an email to confirm your signature after you fill in the details, you will need to click on the link in the email to complete the signature process.

Thanks for your help and time.

They journalists are working for a french company and the help is coming mainly from the french gvt, but since one of the journos is half english, we should do what we can too.

As far as I know they haven't been judged or anything yet, still in prison, awaiting their fate.

Thanks for all the help so far guys

They are imprisoned in Kollo jail near the capital, Niamey. Formally accused of “intelligence with armed groups” for ignoring the ban on journalists visiting the north of the country.

The two freely admit that they ignored the ban. They have written a letter to the Niger President, Mamadou Tandja, admitting their action and apologising. They appreciate that they have trespassed into a sensitive area.....
I am sorry I am not signing it, why should the British Government spend any time or our tax payers money, trying to free people who knew the rules, knew the risks, knew the consequences but still went ahead and did it anyway.

Sorry if that sounds harsh but its my opinion.

Up to you James

They were only trying to find out the truth and let the rest of the world know. If it wasn't for people like them, much of the news we get wouldn't exist.

Don't really want to discuss it here though as the convo could quite rapidly turn into a massive argument, and I don't want that on this topic which I hope we'll all understand.
