Qualifications to be a mechanic ??
Ive been working on cars for nearly 9 years now but only ever in my spare time never as my job.
I can do just bout all general mechanical work around cars and im thinking of changing jobs to see if i can finally get a job as a mechanic but i was wondering if i'll be wasting my time as i have'nt been to collage for it, and as ive only ever done it as a hobby i have no references to back up what i know.
Id ideally like to get into a big firm (more money lol) but would be happy working in a normally garage as long as i can get the same wages im on now or better.
Just wondering what my options are, i cant go back to collage as i have bills to pay so need to work and a night course is out the question as i currently work Days/nights/afters.
Any useful advice would be great.
Cheers Craig.

Most big garages want to see bits of paper, but if you can find a small family garage you may well get in there.
You could always try some of the modern big breakers n work as a vehicle dismantler?

I,d advise against it aswell if your chasing money!!
The Hgv side not much better paid than cars either
Also doing it full time the last thing you want to do in your spare time repair fooking Rs,s

Im currently a Laser operator (engineer) and the pay is around 15-16K, A lot of the jobs ive seen advertised for mechanics are around the same or a little bit more so id rather be doing a job i enjoy than sticking to a job that it just there to pay the bills and that i dont enjoy.

Ive been in the trade since i left school and i hate it. Im trying to find a totally different career. I work for a main dealer, the workshop is a right shiv hole ive worked in cleaner back street garages. I work monday to friday 8.30 to 5 and i come out with 252 quid a week. When you work on cars all day and when you come home you carnt be arsed to do your own car.

Not many people in the trade actually enjoy their job then??
Im in my 1st year as an apprentice, working at a main dealership, not looking forward to the pay prospects by the sounds of it!
Colleages are recieving Ł7 - Ł8 an hour, thought that was quite good
