Default Minor alteration to a vauxhall ecu

The vauxhall 16v engine in the little drag racer nova that a mate and myself run has a rev limit of 6800rpm.

This is fine for the strip as its better to use the torque of the engine than the revs as we use nitrous ( a lot of it )

There is a chance though that we may enter into some top speed events next year and it simply pulls 5th out far too quick.

The only option I can see for this is to increase the rev limit but all the chips I know of advance the ignition which tbh is the opposite of what we need to be doing.

Can the chip in the ecu just be altered to raise the rev limit ? we can already retard the igntion by using different octane plugs that vauxhall supplied so its just the rev limit that would need altering.

Stu would be able to do that, and would also im sure be able to fit a line in the coolant temperature correction table that allows you to take 4 degrees off the timing when on the gas by using a relay to set the resistance of the temp sender input to a fixed value representing 150 degrees, at which point he could have the 4 degrees of retard.

However, I suspect you'd end up with a bill of more than the couple of hundred quid you could just buy megasquirt for.

PS

For YOUR car, (ie bearing in mind the budget and what you want it for) Id buy an off the shelf chip for 50 quid that rasies the limiter like you want but accept it advances the timing slightly and then just chuck a couple of litres of toluene mixer in the tank whenever you want to run the gas to keep the timing safe.

TBH chip I totally agree with that, the sort of cheap engine rebuild is more than the whole car owed us so anymore costs coudl do with just being entry fees and petrol and nitrous

We had considered a adjustable octane plug as such so we could retard the timing that way.

Without proper monitoring its proved difficult to see exactly what the engine is doing on nitrous, nothings melted yet but I do feel its only a matter of time

Whack some toluene in there and it wont melt mate, not with 10 seconds use, as there wont be any det and its not long enough to get really hot.

Thats the approach all the way on this car, its only a bit of cheap fun after all.

Its not expensive tuning gear you need, its spurs and a ten gallon hat
