I think they bought new shells from Ford then converted them to rwd but most were built to order.

They look ace when kept clean and done right !

The company which converted these shells was Gartrac and they did various versions which were denoted a 'G' such as the 'G6' they did Mk3 and Mk4 shells... contact Gartrac for more information
I believe most of the cars actually built completely by Gartrac ran RWD and the Cologne V6

That may be the case on the ones running live axles but all the 4x4 ones I have seen run normal turrets.

A mate of mine had a Gartrac built cabriolet shell and that does not have custom turrets

very unusual Ive never seen proper ones like that before they must be special one offs because dont forget they were built for rally cars and a cab wouldnt be ideal these are normal ones

The cabrio was built by a member of Staff from Gartrac iirc, was a long bloody time ago now.

That car you have shown again is live axle rwd format, I am quite sure that they did build 4x4 ones too which is "maybe" why there is the difference in turrets

I'd imagine the one pictured above runs just about all mk2 escort stuff where as the 4x4's had all the Saph running gear, suspension and steering etc.. attached.

I'm only going on things I've heard so it could be a complete load of bollocks

it would make sense for them to use sierra inner wings and turrets for 4x4 to make life easy I've only ever seen the older ones have you got any more pics of the car it looks interesting

Just looked through the pics that you have posted and its basically a mk2 Escort isn't it !, chassis mounted engine though.

IIRC on the 4x4 Mk 4's the rear wheels sat further back too and the fuel filler had been moved slightly and back bumper slightly shortened, all done so well you would never tell.

I was sure that Spadges Escort was a genuine Gartrac built shell, I'd guess that his wasn't the first of last to be wrapped round a lampost

I have no more pictures of the cabrio, it had a fully independant rear setup and the Gartrac box arches which IMO didn't suit it, strangely the car never got completed and last thing I knew was that is was still being stored in a big garage he did want a LOT of money for it though.

I know around the same time they built a Mk5 Cabrio from a new shell but used all Escort Cosworth panels and inner wings and basically built a factory looking Escort Cosworth Cabrio, it was that rare light blue that the Cosworths come in and packed a 500hp T4'd engine with plate diffs and a trick gearbox I've only seen it go once and I thought I was doing 100mph in reverse as it overtook me

Yep, he was only popping to the shop too

Main thing was that he was alright as that was a proper shunt !

I think Gartrac Mike had the shell from him and Martin @ Reyland was sorting it for him, no idea if its been done or not though

yes i think they are basically mk 2 escorts with a mk 3 shell on top its a shame the cab was never finished

That carbio was a brand new shell, the Mk5 Cosworth Cabrio he has is on a private plate which if I'm not mistaken you cannot put on a Q plate car ?

Most of the converted vehicles were x road cars so that may be why they ended up on a Q

the only rwd conversion cars on normal plates are normally not registered as rwd but because gartrac is a proper company they do it all legit and surely a new shell has no id so it would of gone on a q plate anyway don't no though i don't no how the q plate thing works

My mate scarped a 'non crashed' red one maybe 10 years ago

It had a boxed / turreted (but I think live axle) back end and a V6 - he pulled the engine out because it was 'sweet' and put it in his banger car

The car had the red fleck recaros and the rear bench / cards were custom made and had been trimmed to suit.

Would have been a craking find now as based on how it ended its like it must have only cost him pennies

Spadges was a Genesis not a Gartrac.

Im 90% sure that dark green one above was a private build. Was featured in PF magazine years ago. IIRC Brake servo was in the battery tray area so it was a bit random.

RS Automotive (Mervyn?) built a couple of Cabrios with Cossie lumps.

There was a Blue Gartac for sale on PF back in 03/04 That belonged to a poster. Duncan possibly? Was a wide arch one with a Illusion bumper and quad lights.

On a side note the arches couldnt be removed easily as all the Mk2 based cars had wider track.
