Default MK4 Golf GTI 1.8t - whats the low down?

Right ho..

Clio is gone... YAY

Got myself something to smoke round in for a bit and off to the Auctions tomorrow and Thursday BUT I quite fancy a MK 4 Golf GTI 1.8t.

I know they aint that quick and the diesel has similar performance but I want petrol.

How do I tell a genuine 180bhp from a 150bhp?
Whats all this revo bollocks??

Anything else I wanna know?

don't they use the vvt turbo's? apparently you can't rebuild them when they fuck up and they cost loads of money

if you can stretch to a mk5 then do so, it's a much better car but the handling is still a bit on the "oops, nearly soiled my underpants going round that corner" type

cfoster, you must be driving a different car to mine then, as mine with H&R springs handles absoutely brilliantly for a FWD car, granted the tyres are shit, as there hard wearing, but the handling is amazing.

details of the car are:

67k miles i think, its 60 something, cant remember which, will look later if your seriously interested, 90% VW history, just had cambelt and water pump, lowered 30mm on H&R springs and 18" Mk5 GTI alloys.

Black with black recaro heated leather (VERY RARE) sunroof AND climotronic, electric sunroof, and full electric pack (apart from seats)

Chipped by MSD so basically 180 BHP, but noticably quicker than my friends Skoda octavia RS 180.

Thats about it.

Cheers

I have a Skoda Octavia vRS, and tbh, its not that slow! Comapred to a 400bhp Cossie then tbh, most cars are slow! However, I wouldnt want to do 60 miles a day in a Cossie!

I just never got on with it to be honest, I did come out of a 200sx into it so perhaps used to the handling of that?

I love my Golf, its only a 1.4 and not a GTI but is mega, as Ryan said, they handle mint too, mine is lowered 25mm so that must help...

Not very hard to get more power from the GTI's too, just the usual stuff, zorst, map etc..

Do it Jake!

LOL

I hope it does- I've just seen Ford are taking deposits on new Focus RS's

Interior is nice but I am toying with whether its worth paying the extra for the leather - I suspect the answer may be yes though...

i prefer the heated cloth recaros personally....the leather usually doesn't wear that well at all.

Ł500 deposit ain't much...and you could keep the RS a couple of months and still make some profit, i may do it myself

Heated cloth recaro's... is that the ones where the seats are colour coded and not just grey and black?

I ve got another 1.8t fairly happy with it now, i ve got a black 3 door 19s coilvers about to be fitted, Forge Turbo intake, turbo back milltek just need a fmic then i ll be running about 240bhp.

Not the best handling car but perfect as a long distance crusier pretty refined and with 240 bhp it should be quick enough

Also the 180bhp ones have the KO3s turbo same as the Octy VRS and with a stage 2 remap and the above mods will make 240bhp.

The early golfs are 150 bhp with the Ko3 turbo with an agu engibe with a stage 1 will make 200bhp and stage 2 about 220bhp.

Revo is a Remapping company but atm Custom code are doing 30% off remaps and much smoother in power delivery, more like stock, than Revo which is pretty spikey

My brother had one, I thought i'd take it for a spin as he had been bragging about it. And it was like driving a boat, handling was shocking to say the least. Not to mention they haven't got enough power to take the skin of a rice pudding.

I still don't understand why they put a "GTi" badge on it

Main difference between the 150bhp and the 180bhp modles is the price tag

Anniversarys were the only model available with 180bhp and were only available in black, red or silver.

I love my 1.8T to bits

If you want any guides on buying them etc you won't go far wrong with uk-mkivs. If you need any quick info give me a shout and I'll try and answer for you

I test drove a GT TDI 150 when it was 9 months old from a VW dealer and i was shocked at handling, i went and bought a ST170 instead lol. Ride was like suspension had been removed and a tube of jelly placed instead

My sister's got a GTI 1.8T and makes a good everyday car, comfy, quiet and quick enough for a everyday car but its nothing special like a Seat Cupra R with 225bhp

Stop it..

At the moment I am limiting myself to about 5k... judging by the auction yest I should be quids in with somet sensible..

I have 10k to spend which gets a Cupra R 225 spec one with 30k ish... which IMO looks the tits but I hate the dash- also it means boxster too.. and if I go down the boxster route it means I will open it up some more and but an S.....

forget the 1.8t and get yourself one of them 2.0 tdi things
fantasicly quick and well spec'd
the only prolems are the slightly out of control feeling when you erally stamp on the brakes and the vaugness of the steering going round corners

but all my stuff is based on the mk5, my mate had a mk4 and he said it was a pile of wank, worse than his mk3 astra
