New new shape or the pre-this-year new shape?

Easiest place to check is by the handbrake - on the focus the gaiter clips out (with a bit of persuasion - try squeezing in the long sides and levering out with a flat-blade driver), then there's a 10mm nut which tightens the cable.

The old shape will probabl be a 10mm adjuster down the side of the hand brake lever.

It's a 2002, had a quick look - the centre console looks a right pain to remove, so I hope it's underneath!!

nah. 17mm mate, and as above they are not all adjustable. they are prone for seized handbrake cables though,so would check those first.

Checked earlier - there is no adjuster under the centre console!!

Does the exhaust HAVE to come off or just be dropped off the rubbers? So you can get the heatshield out the way??

you can do it on a ramp but the heat shield has to come down (you can wiggle it over the exhaust)

it had auto adjusters until 2002, and there was also a recall on the 2002 cars because the handbrake will sieze up because of this arrangement

get the handbarke up then pull the cable to see if there is any slack in it
it might even be the caliper thats at fault
