Default Ahh cheese (for a better word?) :(

Just had a phonecall from one of my best mates missus to say he has been involved in an incident at work (He is a train driver and we went thru the training school together - one of those people you instantly click with when you meet, hence we are best mates now).

Without going into too much detail, he's run someone down somewhere between Leeds and Ilkley

I know ehat he'll be going thru at the moment aswell and its not nice (as I'm sure the other train drivers on here will concurr) as I have been there myself and done it, especially having to check for life signs when you go back to the remains

I really don't know what to say or do to help him tho, I feel pretty much useless

That's horrible. Just be there for him. I am sure he will understand.
Check for life signs?????????? I'd keep going to the next station. Risk my life incase I get knocked down by an oncoming train. No.
What was somebody doing on the track???????

There are procedures in place and the job gets stopped so no other trains can approach etc etc etc.

Someone on the track? Your guess is as good as mine, but its the season for fatalities - christmas, new year, GCSE and A-Level results times are all "peak" times for this sort of event

A mate of mine who was a tube driver used to reckon that someone jumping under your train is great cause it gets you 6 months off work with stress?

Every cloud and all that

RIP to the person concerned though obviously!

Fuck the person concerned Chip, they shouldn't of even been there. I have no sympathy at all for trespassers regardless of who they are.

6 months because thats when half pay starts and your competency expires as you haven't driven for 6 months. I had a few weeks off with both of mine

I am sure there has to be a better way than chucking yourself in front of a train? They not only kill themselves, but ruin someone elses life as well - the train drivers.

That must take a lot of balls to step in front of a train. I mean things have to be that bad for someone to do that.

Not had one yet, but it will happen

Driven over a few dead bodys.

Changed turns with another driver and he had someone

Nothing that you can do Paul except tell him its not his fault.

Happens a lot this time of year

That a bid situation for your mate.

its silly as theres so many centres that are open/able to be called if you feel the world is getting too much.

such a selfish way to end it.

hope he is ok. i wouldnt think he would get done for it. not his fault.

trains dont stop on a 6pence

Not the drivers fault when your going at x amount of speed and plough into someone pretty much killing them straight away either spread like jam all over the place or cut up and sprayed up all underneath dripping off and your travel over them.

But thats the risk of the job and the pay and the time you get off after when something happens like that.

Jumping infront of a train defo aint a cry for help.... theres no coming back from it, gotta have some guts to do it but also is quite cowardly when you think of the families, train drivers, workers to clean the mess up ect...... RIP

How nasty and upleasant it seems he just has to get on with things.. anyone who says it dont effect them is talking shiebe . I have dealt with a few incidents which have involved people dying through accidents, victims of crime or people who just cant handle life anymore...You just have to put them behind you and move on.. There are plenty of agencies that offer support etc, but i find just talking about stuff with your family is the best way of dealing with things... It is weird when we deal with some sort of fatal incident as our nick is full of banter and joke telling... i think its just a way of blowing off steam

Obviously if this was a suicide then you just have to think well this person put himself in that position and his death was what he wanted... 9/10 people who threaten suicide is no more than a cry fo help. To actually carry out the act is when they have exhausted all over avenues.

On a renewal we were doing southend way, approx 1/4 mile from a station a guy was waiting in the 4foot (the track) leaning against the platform waiting to be run over.. I told him he had a long wait (it was 4pm sunday, we were not due to finish engineering works untill 3 am the next day) so the next train wasnt due for another 11 hours

Some of the replies ive read are shocking

Yes it may be a cry for help in some cases but in others its only only way out.

And yes to the ones saying its the selfish way out, when you feel everything is against you and no matter what you try to to and it doesnt help, sometimes people in that state of mind do what the need to.

Its not a place i want to be again (been there a few times), im not afraid to talk about it as it lets others see why people want to jump in front of trains. etc....

I posted up before that i suffered from clinical depression and the response was great, loads of others said they had the same or know others that had the condidtion and were managing to get on with there life.

But

It only takes a person with depression to have a few low spells to tip them over the edge, anti depressants work for some but not everyone, it could take months for the doctors to get you on the correct tablets.

Its a very missunderstood condition that alot of people shy away from and keep to themselfs.

Thats why so many people dont understand the tru meaning of depression.

I do feel sorry for the person killed and the train driver

I know alot of people reading this will know what i mean

Maybe the said person could have jumped off a cliff as you said but have you ever been in that situation ?????

Do you think the said person/people would have done what they did if there life was as good as yours ??

They did it as its an easy way out because they feel they have nothing left in their life, nothing to live for.

Ive been there as ive said and i hope none of you ever get to that stage as its not a nice state of mind to be in.

On both counts of seeing and hitting - its not pleasant, especially as you look directly at the person before the impact, that is the worst part for me personnally

Rich is doing ok considering its his first one, personally I think he is bottling it up a bit, off round to his place again later to have a chat with him

You didnt NEED to answer

And apart from that, he wouldnt be deceased, he would still be alive if he had steered round him
