Only way they would work consistantly over that distance would be through a repeater of some sort, or someone is quoting height / distances which are possible as a one off but not everyday acheivable.

Maybe someone has been inside and tweeked the TX wattage power up ?

3 - 4 miles would be a realistic norm depending on band and frequency.

A link would be handy so we can see if any of the above could be done.

I have a 25-30 watt radio in the car and we have had that sort of distance from a high spot back to service... but ours are tweeked lol

As a licensed radio ham trust me none of them will do the range they say.Your looking a couple miles at best in open ground. And it doesn't matter if they have been tweaked or not.power wise there is very little you can do to tweak the power The only way would be thru a repeater and these don't have the capability to use them.
on the other hand if you have a good station set up like this you can talk all over the world.

this is just a small collection of older valve radio's in my shack

What conditions are you looking at operating them under AG ?

Vehicle - vehicle

Base - base

Vehicle - base etc

Some US frequency radio's arn't legal over here, and as said those will be lucky to push 1 mile coverage.

Tommy - G3 G8 G0 or M ?

If car to car you would prob be better off with cb handheld as you can connect external ant and use the whip when on walk about. And as cb has now been deregulated you don't need a license. If the smaller size is important then the us spec one's tend to be higher powered but most are illegal in the uk so its the chance you take.
ps
auto ptt is called vox so look out for that in the spec

i'm using this setup which i thought would do well
but i'm still not happy with the range.
the stubby aerial unscrews and then you can connect
the external aerial ,used for car to pit
.

d700, dolphin network, uses mobile phone repeaters so phones can talk back to back, if u get an unlocked nokia they will come with ptt installed, same thing as dolphin used tho has now been taken over mailny orange offer it as an option to your contract tho the most common use is the "airwave" or new police radios

You want one of these badboys - Philips FM1200

Retune them to RX and TX all frequencies, very cheap to buy and modify aswell

Speak to Neo as he is a mega buff when it comes to radio stuff

The "tray" as we call it at work, is mounted under the dashboard and the head linked to it via a fly-lead. Some have 1200 heads and some have 1000 heads, all the same really, just depends on what Partco have in stock
