The front end of the turbo is relatively unscathed. I think it snapped the shaft and the rest of the turbo is in the exhaust. I heard it tinkling afterwards while the car was running, so I guess not.

However, as I said above, I'm not sure I want to go on with this, its soul destroying.

Turbo? Warranty? Thats the funniest thing I've ever heard.

No doubt I will get suggestions of Oil Contamination, Over-speeding and all the usual standard excuses thrown at me making it my fault.

Mate,

If you're feeling like that just back off from it a while, you might feel differently in a month or so, if not, do what you feel is best fella.

Thats a very custom GT30. I have recently spent over Ł300 on the custom mods to the back housing, which looks like its ruined. I think it will get a brand new core, and a choice of the 2 other internally 'gated housings that I own and then sold. Will be as good as new by then, but sadly will cost a fortune to repair.

Good backpressure readings from that mod

Why are turbos not covered with proper warranty meaning you are due a replacement?

Well, the engine has only done 8k to date and it had a GT28 on for a considerable amount of that.

I was only running 1.8 bar on the day and that turbo's Compressor map is efficient to 2.5 bar, so can't really be that.

It's the norm in the Turbo industry, there's always an excuse.

We will see, I will get it sent off tomorrow.

bad news then.

are the roller bearing turbos weaker than the std type? genuine question as i dont know, but i guess they are not because of some very big power cars uses rollers.

would it not be worth your while sending it back to the manufacturer to see if it was a material defect?

they may at least offer some discount?

Dan,

Alot of people don't like the Roller bearing turbos because they reckon they're weak

I've heard a few people slate the GT Series versions over the T series..i've never had one so can't comment...just what i've heard and read..

Do you know what caused the failure ?

Also off topic but how close was the readings for the Evo on the other rollers compaired to yours ?

Christain - I am fully aware of how it is, I still find it amazing that it is like this for a new supplied part. Eg a 1k "consumable" part for a car. I guess you can say its the chance in tuning, just royally stinks when compressor maps supplied from manufacturer etc all say good to go. If you phone up and say what you want you are advised to get a type of turbo but then its not covered by warranty from that same supplier who is wanting to sell you it. Makes no sense in some ways unless cost is a driving factor but they are still bloody expensive!

shit happens Christian.

thats the thing in running high spec engines etc...it's expensive to replace the broken bits when things go wrong.

just get it fixed and carry on,you have a target to beat.

why go custom modding the housing?
surely there is a turbo close to what you want from it?
thats just bad luck nobody's fault,
it would be only ppl like formula1 that would
xray everything so you wouldn't be expected to do that.
did you use launch control / antilag ever on this turbo?

Just take a step back for a while Christian, you have just had an expensive mishap & also lost the Topspeed record.
You must now decide which of the following you do.
Walk away from record breaking & be greatfull you achieved what you have & perhaps build a less extreme car
or
Decide to come back with a better, more powerfull car & try to regain that title.
I had to make that decision & decided on the latter .

Chin up im sure that lovely wife of yours will back you whatever you decide.

Dont think its ever been proved either way that DVs help fuck all in this respect.

Some big tuners (Roger Clark Motorsport for example) dont even run em as they just give another possible leak and no noticable help anywhere.

Rarely if ever see top turbo race cars running DVs, even LeMans etc where surely theyd fit one as they got some long ass racing to break the turbos with...
