People on Elecy meters
Might be a stupid question but you don't pay any more do you? One of my tenants told me he wants to be on a monthy bill as the key meter is loads more expensive, I recon he is just feeling it at the moment as the flat has no gas heating only electric and where as the bill averages out the payments over the year so you pay simluar each month?

key meters are far more expensive mate!
monthly DD means the Actual Unit Rates are far lower, ie every time the meter clicks round it costs the customer far LESS!
you need whats called a Dry meter for a monthly DD
most energy comanies wil change the meters (s) for free if u have a good credit history with them

Keymeters arent actually that much more expensive at all, there is very very little difference in the unit price.
You can do comparissons on sites like USwitch
Where you can get caught is with the older card meters, where rates have to be changed on the individual meters, Powergen only did mine once in 2 years and then when I finally had it taken out and replaced with a traditioanl meter hit me with a fook off bill.... to which I told them to fook off...
And after a lot of fooks they reduced the bill by over 80% which was a result.
But this isnt a problem with Key meters the rates are set centrally.
Better than him fookin off and leaving you with a big debt with the Electric Company though......

I have a meter that I top up with a card, the unit price is exactly the same as if I paid to get rid of the card meter and go on a normal one and be billed
Its only landlords who use the pay meters to make profits! I own my own house and unit rates are as per a normal bill

I have a meter for gas and leccy. I have heard that its far more expensive but I seem to cope better with one as theres no extra bill. We asked to go on one a few years ago as I lost my job and have been on it every since with no problems.
Not sure how much more it is but as I said much prefer no bills every month/quarter

It all depends on your circumstances and usage.
If you are only there of an evening to sleep and work the rest of the time, then it will be cheaper to use a key-meter, if you actually stay indoors occasionally (or more often), it will be worse.
When I took back my house from the person who was renting it, there was a key meter installed (so I did not get any nasty surprises) and whilst decorating, I was using over £10 every 2 days just on 2 lights being on of an evening and a DeWalt corded drill going for a while. Had it ripped out ASAP and my bills are now only £30 per month and I have a computer server on 24 hours, tv most evenings, 3 x fishtanks (the 6ft one alone has 3 heaters), plus other electrics (heating is gas so not including that). And I am with British Gas, who apparently is meant to be one of the dearest, yet uswitch and all the others cannot match the amounts. Oh by the way, I am also in credit on the gas (£35) and electric (£8) and pay monthly by fixed DD, so no hidden or suddenly high bills either.
