Default How safe is a Topspeed run seems

http://www.vmax15000bhp.com/

not very if you see what these guys get upto.

If you have been on this Forum in the last few weeks a high profile Cossie has a problem & all of a sudden Topspeed runs are more Dangerous than the north face of the Eiger & so uncool my cars has melted .

The website above is the home of the experts in this field, these guys do it for fun time after time, not one but many runs per event. If you think they aint going fast the record is an incredible 211 & 3 cars past the present Cossie record. In the past year or so 108 cars past 180 & an amzin 31 are over 190. 100's complete their flatout run with no problems & cant wait for the next one.
They use road tyres & are not competition prepared & none enter events like totb although the record breaking Porsche would almost certainly win the Topspeed discipline.
I dislike being called an idiot or irresponsible cos I will be entering my car to try & crack that record.
Hope this gets a bit of perspective into the Topic & because some think its irrelevant to have a fast car go fast their will always some that wish to set records & push the boundaries out of reach of others.

most of the guys i run around with will not hesitate to do 160 on the road at night on cars that aint been checked(tyres etc) so I think a top speed run on a run way witha car that has been double and triple checked aint that bad.

Who can honestly say if they had a car that would go 170 on the road that they would not have tried it atleast once.

IMO 170is when it starts to get risky on the road

Most form of competition in cars involves some form of risk.

My own opinion of topspeed runs is that the risk of an accident is pretty low, but the potential for that accident to be fatal is pretty high.

I think it could be a lot safer if doing a measured mile, rather than trying to outbreak yourself, and I think that would still be a valid comparison between the cars, but I can still see the appeal of what you do, and from a technical point of view I think its absolutely awesome.

its a risk you decide to take,if it goes wrong at 180+ you are going to get hurt.ive not heard of any deaths, but its going to happen sooner or later.i will only try it once in my escos, changing into 5th at 150 mph is scary when the power kicks in,

danger is all relative, 180mph on a deserted wide runway with lots of run-off is far safer than 130Mph down the local dual track

Well i admire anyone doing it if i'm honest must start to get really scary after 150.

I've done a few silly speeds now and again like Euan says where you shouldn't and i have to be honest, my palms start sweating i balls out way before the car..

I'd like to see what mine would do top end, probably around 160-170 i guess.

That is the issue.

I'd rather not think what it would look like after a big off, its what does scare me about the hot hatch turbo conversions.

160 in a kit kat rapper is cool but it wouldn't be so cool if something went wrong, I had a big un in 2000 in a Nova SR doing 80mph and fook me the car was a serious mess.

Fair play to anyone that does it though and tbh if I had Rods car I would be doing the same as him, its there to be enjoyed.. and proven

that run i only use full throttle from 4th onwards.

My new turbo comes in with a bit more of a bang than that one.

Of course high speeds have some danger in it.
But things like rollcages and nitrogen in the tirs schould help to make less of hazzardous.

Ive done nothing or even driven my car for over 2 years mate so you may be wrong on that this is about safety on Topspeed runs not about me.

And next years TOTB is likely to be dropped to a standing 1km.

As for high speed runs being dangerous....Well, TBH so far even my car has felt fairly stable. I honestly cant wait to get a chance again with a proper engine.

But anything can happen, as did very recently with an Evo. So so lucky.

A very lucky and narrow escape on that video above and previously posted!

I can understand that owners of High powered vechile's wish to test the limits of their car on these High speed runs on such places as Bruntingthorpe and other places around the UK, but however I think some form of disclaimer should be signed before attempting such trials. I can also understand the risk you could put yourself under but something mildly legal to cover people on these days out could be a smart or bad move. I know we go through enough Red tape these days with legislation we are under, but something to have as a piece of mind for driver(s), spectators and other participants maybe an idea?

I may be talking bollocks but I may be speaking some truth, its only fair to give yourself something incase of an incident, or even worse death from such events

Just my tuppence worth on the subject really

at 200mph how many cages are gonna be "safe" ,,,,,, considering rods using a normal sierra and seats, seat belt, sunroof ect

then theres the internal damage from the crash also if the car flips about enough,,,,, but yeah the tyres might be salvaged i guess

sorry but a roll cage aint gonna help a bloke with a cardigan and a normal interior IMO

nitrogen will help ease the pain until hes bled out i guess

danger is fun,,, just like breaking the law ect,,, it when you get caught that the reality kicks in,,,, sorry but i respect what your doing rod but its VERY dangerous !!!
