Can anyone recommend a good set of spring compressors ??

don't get the halfords ones 
the set you need wil have t sets of prongs on each end, this limits the ammount of slipage when the spring wants to turn against itself
alternaticvly, you can always try and find a set that has a bearing puller type disc on either end which cups the total spring and then you can wind it in and out as much as you want for the best resluts, but i always get to the point where things are going to look a bit tricky and then wrap loads of nylon rope arounf the springs total coils (individually wrapped per coil this i) and then slacken the clamps off to reposition them a little bit
but i always use 4 clamps anyway, just to be sure
