what would you buy
hypethetically(!),
if say you had 10-15k to spend on a car.needs to be quick, reliable, big enough for me and to be used daily.need it to go the ring and back.
my shortlist
e46 m3 (bit small but great car for track)
e39 m5 (bigger but is it as good as m3)
impreza sti(just had one!)
evo 5/6/7(good value now)
focus rs (got hot round ring last year but great car)
focus st (is it as good as the rs)
other possibilities
keep the audi a6 biturbo (auto, and big-but very comfy!)
skyline r33 gtr(still not had one)
civic type-r(sounds like fun,but small)
escort cossie( germany and back )
anything else?
should make good discussion
arguments for/against please
thanks

Evo=good car would need to be a decent clutch to go to the ring & take all the abuse
Subaru=you have had one
Escort cossie=as you say will it make it there & back
Focus rs=you have had one
Having not long sold a E46 m3 i think you would like it & would be great for the ring..
& if you want a bit more comfort & want 400bhp its got to be the E39 m5...All the way hands down.

out of them all its the 2 german fellas that appeal the most.
ive had an e30 and e36 m3 and an e34 m5.ive driven an e46 m3 and a csl which i loved but havent driven an m5 e39.
is it like chalk and cheese and unfair to compare the 2 back to back?
but still not had a skyline yet,but i think im meant not to have one as every time one comes up-something else takes me away from it.

think i need to drive an m5.......
i love the drive of the e46 m3,but im a big lad and i think it'll feel a bit small as ive had e46 coupes before.
but if the m5 doesnt feel like i want it to then i would probably compromise and get the m3.

Easily get an E46 M3 for 15K.
I was shocked at the relative cheapness of them, its going to be an 51/02 plate, with 60k+ miles, but come on, its a beemer, loads of toys, plenty power out the box. total steal!!
Deffo the M3 from that list.

anyway ive had an evo 4 and 6.
i have been doing some reading up on the e39 m5 and it seems to be very well liked.i think its just a bit understated as it looks just like my old 535 sport. but with 400 bhp and over 350lb torque it must be fun!
its looking favourite, especially as there are some decent looking ones for Ł11kish-4k less than i can find e46 m3's for.

V70R phase 2 2003 onwards 6 speed AWD 300bhp estate car active chassis adj settings 4pot massive brembo brakes front & rear 4 pots HALDEX 4wd 18 inch wheels, comfy as fook, loads of space, we take ours to the South of France fully loaded & it carries shit loads plus 2 kids, if you have a family a mitsi evo or M3 is far too small. Plus bog standard volvo quote 5.9 0-60 for manual so still fairly quick, had mine over a year & love it, such a Q car, if i didn't need an estate car then i would have an E39 M5 as it still has a fair amount of room. Its all very well having an Evo etc but they aren't much good for long distance journeys with the whole family. I doub't you find more than 3 or 4 manual phase 2 2003 onwards V70 R's for sale in the whole country though, very rare car.

I have a BMW as well M3 Evo estoril blue but much prefer the Volvo to drive, the 5 cylinder growl & waste gate chirp Out of all the cars you have mentioned i would go with an E39 M5 they are a real performance bargain just very expensive to maintain.
