Default 4x4 7.5" rear diff conversion

Has anyone used a 2wd rear 7.5" diff on a std 4x4 drivetrain? I'm looking to swap mine to a 7.5" one but I'm quite worried about killing the centre VC, IIRC the 4x4 stuff is 3.64:1 and the 2wd is 3.62:1?

Fitting a different brand of front-rear tyres would probably cause more of a difference.

Or new/worn F-R tyres etc.

might be easier swapping the full back end as you would want/need the 2wd shafts too.

well I have a spare 2wd back end sat here, I am considering swapping the lot over, just don't want to kill my brand new VC

Do you have to use the 2wd hubs as well or will the 2wd drive shafts fit the 4x4 rear hub?

I think the hub/bearing carrier is the same.

You would however need the outer section of CV/Stub, as this is a larger diameter on the 2wd, same as the diff output flanges.

will all you have to do is put the 2wd beam on your 4wd everything esle will fit no need to change hubs ect

the 2wd shafts will go in to your 4wd hubs no probs

I know martin used 2wd diff in his mondeo and he never cooked the center vc either

just swap the whole beam over

all you need to do is keep the calipers and discs from the 4wd car, but you'll still have to sort the bleeding out

everything just bolts directly in, just make sure you remember that the prop is offset on the bolt pattern otherwise you'll be tearing your hair out (like me) when it don't line up

no mate, the bolts lookl ike they will be square, like on a road wheel, but they ain't, they are in a rectangle, so you'll get one bolted up fine, and then the next one will be out of alignment and you'll spend 3 days ing yourself before someone else comes and tells you the same thing

yes, it will, but the holes will either be spot on ot 90 degrees out, if they are 90 degrees out then you will have the alignment problems i had

I researched this a lot. The easiest and cheapest way is to use a 2wd beam and a Granada 7.5 LSD diff as it has the 4x4 output flanges and you can buy those diffs for peanuts (mine was £30 odd quid!) Me and Bernie measured up the standard 4x4 7" diff and a Granda 7.5" diff and the output flanges are identical in terms of size and distance between them and position in the two beams

I however i'm not following this route thou and bought a 2wd Quaife rear diff with the larger Quaife output flanges (so i'm using the larger 2wd shafts aswell) which is at Bernies at the moment being rebuilt into a V6 case and having a shoot peened and polished 3.9 CWP. So the box has gotta come out and go back to DPE for the drop down

but the lsd versions have different outplut flanges to the non led versions

so if you are going to put a non lsd diff in you need to be aware of that

also, there are 3 different lengths of driveshaft to consider into the equation as well, being 20.5 inches, 20 inches and 18.5 inches due to the difference of the diff width (something that was denied by others up until they were forced to admit it when they reported it as a discovery they had made after rubbishing my findings about 6 months earlier)

just so that you are aware

from what i can remember, the shorter shaft was the one on the drivers side, but i don't have pics on this computer so i shall try and get them sorted for tomorrow evening

The one we measured was idenitcal in width and output flanges to the esc cos 4x4 7" lsd diff and the granada 7'5" lsd diff
