If you have a machine thats over 3 years old the likely hood of you installing vista and everything working isnt very likely buy it on a new prebuilt machine and you will know everything works.
Personally im still on xp pro because not all my hardware works with vista, and my sound card doesnt function to its full capability either so ive got shit sound aswell
Xp for now

Vista Media Centre is the dogs So if you have a PC you intend to use solely for music, video, tv, etc, then get Vista Media Centre as it's cool as shit
Otherwise, I'd stick to XP Media Centre as unless you are a computer nerd or at least more than averagely computer literate, you'll probably not like Vista as an OS.... Most people who are just regular joes who have had Vista say they preferred XP.....
XP Media Centre isn't vastly different to normal XP, in fact in most ways it's the same. but the bolt on addition of Media Centre is quite cool.....

I have vista ultimate and that has media centre...
It's proper easy to use records everything that you want you can set up to record a whole series etc
Also where you can have the 360 on the same network you can watch films on whatever other tv you like through the 360's media centre ..

Or you could try media portal?
Not a bad alternative if you don't want to fuck about with changing operating system..
http://www.team-mediaportal.com/
Can be a bit of a pain to set up but once it is done it is just as easy as mce

if its an older pc, as long as you have a spare pci slot for a tv tuner i've whack windows xp media centre edition 2005 on it, it basically xp pro.
ive got the hauppauge hvr1300 freeview card with built in hardware encoder in a old compaq 2ghz p4 with justy 512mb ram , 250 gb hdd and a xfx 6200 agp card for the tv out. it basically replaced my dvd player, video recorder, stereo and freeview box.
so its got all my mp3s on it, and is like sky + for freeview, well impressed with it.
