how do i stop someone from changing a document i've got written in word?

i've got as far as being able to protect document but then it says:
tracked changes
comments
forms
then it says password optional

so how do i do it?

it's different on this set up to what i'm used to as i used to be able to just turn it into a read only file

You could turn it into a PDF file, if you google free PDF creator there are loads of free programmes to download.

In MS Word 2003, click on TOOLS, PROTECT DOCUMENT (you may have to unfold the pull-down to see this.

A box appears on the right hand side.

In Option 2, select Everyone, then click START ENFORCING.
You will be asked for a password and the job is done.

Alternatively go into tools, options, security and whack a password into the "modify" box, reenter it and remember to save it and its done.

Just booted up a REALLY old laptop (so old that the battery doesn't work!) and tried it in Word 97

TOOLS, PROTECT DOCUMENT
Select FORMS, add a password and that's that.

I don't have anything any older to check for you, but hope this does what you need.

Alternatively, if you go to the Adobe website, you can convert a number of documents to pdf each day without downloading anything.
