ripped off - Power Engineering
My brother booked his car into power-engineering (last friday) to have a second hand ST170 manifold fitted & New exhaust system fitted to a Focus 1.8 Zetec.
He got a low mileage ST170 manifold, Cat, flexi-pipe etc from a Brakers and supplied them with a new blueflame Cat back system, new power steering pipe, new dipstick tube, new heat shield etc. basically everything that is required for the conversion.
They told him they have done the conversion many times before and could do this providing they did not encounter any problems.
Firstly they told him the old ST170 manifold he supplied was damaged and they had a new one that could be used at £206 Inc. VAT.
He said ok, maybe there is chance that he has been shafted by the brakers.. so said yes go-ahead.
Next they tell him the power-steering pipe he has supplied is incorrect.. the wrong part. But when he asked for the correct part number he would not provide this to him and said if they cannot bend the old pipe into shape a new pipe will be required on Monday.. all he said there is 2 types of p/steering pipe.. BULLSHIT.
A quick phone call to ford & toque of the devil (very helpful) confirmed that there is only 1 power steering pipe required and this is the correct pipe, all that was needed was a push on nut, he picked up the nut and delivered it to them and even fitted onto the pipe himself..
Then he got another phone call suggesting that there grease monkey fitter is struggling to get the new p/steering pipe to fit. (more labor would be charged). Now he just wants the car out of there and back ASAP.
At the end of the day they charged him for 8hrs labor and the total came to near £600..
We have since got another garage to check the old manifold on another focus 1.8 zetec.. and you guessed it, no problem with fitting as it’s not damaged.
Have a look at their website. A New manifold is £150 incl VAT.
http://www.powerengineering.co.uk/ac..._EXHAUSTS.html
He paid £206 for the bloody thing!! And we have receipt to prove it.
Update: I have contacted ford and the cost for a new manifold is £176.00 + VAT. £206.80 incl VAT for the manifold (so there web site price is incorrect).
NOTE: NEVER USE POWERENGINEERING UNLESS YOU WANT TO BE RIPPED OFF.
Thanks,
Manoj

That sounds pretty bad tbh - sounds as though they realised they wouldnt make any profit in doing the conversion (just the labour side) so have decided to try to make money on parts instead
My only experience of Power Engineering was when i went there last year for an mot & their head mot tester spend 10 mins trying to start my Focus RS with the key & told me my starter motor had gone & the car would fail its mot - one of the lads in the warehouse then told him it was a Focus RS and you started the car with the green button marked ''ENGINE START'' - he then proceeded to grind my front splitter out on the ramp into the workshop once the mot was finished lets just say i wasnt impressed said as much & wouldnt go back - Rob @ SCC all the way for me now

Loads of "respected" tuners do shit like this, as they KNOW the uk has a culture of just saying ok to anything they told, without questioning anything at all.
Disgusting, and a big reason ive always worked on cars myself.
On the GTR board recently this guy was about to buy a GT series turbo (forget which one) and was then convinced by a well known turner and turbo seller to spend nigh on twice the money for their version which had all these extra fancy parts and he was convinced the extra performance would be worth the money...
In reality ALL of those parts were standard issue on this turbo, and it was just the company (as usual) taking advantage of the UK consumers lack of knowlege and blind trust to rip him out of cash.
Cosworth scene isnt too bad for it as a higher percentage of owners know the crack, but stuff like the Skyline scene is unbelivably bad.

That's a bad story from the one side I've seen, so on that basis sorry to hear what your brother has been through Poor behaviour normally reserved for cowboy back street garages
Does anyone from PE come on here that could give their side of the story (if there is one?), before we all become the usual Passionford Judge and Jury?
Si

As far as the manifold price goes, the price of them has been put up by Ford recently from what I've been told.
I've dealt with PE loads and they did the turbo conversion on my car, not had any probs. Sorry to hear things havent turned out well for you though.
My advice would be to ask speak to Dickie (Richard Prior) the owner and see if you can sort it out with him as he's a good bloke and will try and resolve the issue if he can.
Hope this helps.

The second had parts was the manifold & cat, you take a gamble when you buy something from a brakers. but these looked fine and are ok.
He simply saw one advertised for half the price of a new one and thought I’ll take it and save some money for other mods,.
He already knew they were the correct parts as he checked this out extensively on the FFOC forum first.
I’ve done the same thing mate, bought parts from NYRS that are in very good condition instead of buying them new and saved myself money.
a) Power Engineering lied to him, they told him the manifold was bent/defective and they had problems fitting this, told him a NEW one would be best, when clearly there is no damage to old one as it since been fitted to another car.
b) The Web site suggest the manifold is £150 inc vat, and they charged him £206. He had not seen the price on their web site until today, and has a receipt from them proving they have over charged him.
thanks,
Manoj

PLEASE NOTE.
The car drives fine and conversion is worth it.
BUT not worth it if you work out what they have charged him.
I spoke to them when he picked the car up and found their professionalism sucks and very dishonest when challenged to show us on the receipt of what he was paying for.. they were only interested in charging more money.

ive always thought power's were up front about everything they do, ive never had any issues with them in the past but having said that ive not used them in the last year or two i now go to jam-sport , cant help think they need all the trade they can get as totd is only down the road from them & they have stared to play dirty & how many old power customers go to totd? bet loads.

monkey spank?, WTF? mind that Matty does not come down and spank you!
sorry to hear this of the PE lads, they should know how to do it, my guess is they had a new manifold and couldnt remember how much it was, so called ford with the finis code and asked for the price, totally innocent but should have really checked the web site.

profit - engineering
would never use them after a mate was told his s1 engine was fuct, when someone who knew what they were doing looked at it,there was no problem to be found.just trying to sell him a new engine at an over inflated price! went there once to pick up a 2.0 cvh bottom end,the bloke there thought he knew everything and wouldn't listen to anyone.so i rang the same someone who looked at the s1 (a few years later) and he couldn't waffle him with bullshit! would never recommend them even for the easiest job.
