Thanks for the comments...

As for the boost, there are other reasons to why its capped to

The Boost map is not 100% finished, we are trying different things to see how it feels.

Looks like the thrust bearing has gone in the turbo, so this could explain why it appears a bit lazy and doesn't come on boost as early...

We will get that sorted and see what it makes in a couple of weeks

Surely you knew that?

Mike had different boost levels for different gears in his saff 10 years ago, using a slightly crude but very effective set of electronic triggers on the gearlever.

Bet the car goes well though - I haven't been out in it since it had no arches, greens and a T34, and was held together with cable ties!

Crude? It had a microprocessor and combined with the micro switches on the gear lever, you could tell it which boost position (0-9) you wanted it to have in each of the five gears. Worked with the air injectors, and I actually had it usually set so that it could do 2.5 bar of boost in the lower gears and then 2.2 bar in 4th and 5th . This was for show boating with the tall diff:
235/40 tyres:
1st = 59mph @ 8000rpm
2nd = 89mph @ 8000rpm
3rd = 129mph @ 8000rpm
4th = 172mph @8000rpm (my favourite party track, getting the shift lights flashing at 170mph and then changing UP - you'd hear a wimper from most people ).
5th = 216mph @ 8000rpm (most ever seen in fifth = 6800rpm).

0= 0.7 bar
1= 0.9 bar
2= 1.1 bar
3= 1.3 bar
4= 1.5 bar
5= 1.7 bar
6= 1.9 bar
7= 2.1 bar
8= 2.3 bar
9= 2.5 bar

Anyone of those settings could be programmed into any gear .

Good figures Steve!

Forget the power figures..... it´s how it drives that counts. As you said if you can not fully get the power down (regardless of what that is) with your set-up, whats the point in having the torque at that rpm. Some people seem to forget you have 2wd and fuckall weight! Of course plemty others will say they have that power, but if the car losses traction there is NO point in having that power at that rpm.

As said.... definately worth having per gear boost control. Get a proper ECU (like a standard Scooby one lol) and you can have ignition, boost & fuel per gear! Of course other aftermarket ones are available that you can use.

External boost control on the L8 would be ok, but the real gains to be had would be with moving onto something like Autronic, that would totally transform that car

why would autronic transform the car.

The L8 was designed with the cosworth the autronic will run different pot engines won't it.

I'll still with the L8 cause the autronic car's have have been in don't seem any smoother on and off the throttle LOL...

Because you would be able to use features like traction control and boost control in gears to allow you to have back that 150lbft you have lost (and more)

The L1/L6/L8 series of ECU's wasnt designed for the cosworth, it was used on loads of different engines, its just what ford could get hold of cheap a couple of decades ago that was up to the job compared to other ecu's of that time.

You probably need to go in some more cars with SM2/SM4 etc fitted then to see the benefits.

Exactly, the only thing "matched" to the cossie is the standard map that we all throw in the bin anyway as its running bugger all boost and bugger all advance, lol

...my ducati 916sp runs the P8 as std!

...not too fused about aftermarket ecu's tbh...L8 up is more than adequate!

On a fantastic engine like the one Karl has built dingy, it would be nice to have some boost control (either from the ecu or externally) that is more than just "adequete", it would be good to have something that means he can have the massive torque the engine is capable of producing at the times it has traction for it, and then still make it tame like it is now (relatively, its still an animal im sure, lol) in the lower gears.

Personally I think it would be wrong to try and get the lost torque back, as it would still be undriveable and would be an accident waiting to happen even in the taller gears.

I totally agree with how Steve has had it mapped, as now he can drive it HARD without having to worry that the car is going to bite him big time, which will make it MUCH faster on track.

I'm starting to believe a Apexi AVCR is the way forward tbh, you really need to know how get the most from it though or its worthless.

Properly awesome though Dingy and I agree with Mike that you can most probably drive it harder and safer now

Is it cause its not laggy and has loads of midrange

Not a can of worms, as the figures were all over the place on my runs and it ran less boost i'll take it with a pinch of salt...
