the difference is, in a syncro box, the syncromesh matches the speed of the gears "before" allowing the gears to be changed! on a dog engagement box the gears just bang straight in, dissadvantge of the dog box of cause is that the "dogs" will wear

dog gears

dog engagement is just a different selector mech within the gearbox.

It allows you to shift up the box....without using the clutch, same as motorbike boxes.

But due to the nature of how it works, smooth road shifts arent to be expected as with normal syncromesh boxes.
But some designs do seem to be better than others in this respect.

i presume the wear is only majorly down to how much you 'dont' use the clutch? very quick gear changes then!

Wear will occur during every shift. How severe depends on how well gearspeeds tend to be matched during the shift I guess.

A synchro Skyline box could be a good option for a road car.

Speaking to lee today is he is well happy with his, and also heard that mike did over 35k in miles

And all this from a standard input shalf and 1st gear

But what about standing starts.

So who know what then???

This is a info post only and just wanting to know whats out there and how much!!

Cheers

Dave
I've launched the Sierra ALOT on the Bara box. Only ever break shafts, never the box.

I am on 3.9 diffs which gives the box a much easier time though.

Car might be a little lighter than yours though. Not as much as you think though. Big cage don't forget!

I will be changing to that dog box though if Bara start doing them!!!

Cooooooooooooool

Mullit I'd say given that Porkie runs his at well over 500 bhp and rags the fook out of it on track days!

Seem to be very good for the money too...

Si
I ran both boxes with no problems at all.

Fixit is alot quieter than the Bara box as its helical not straight cut.

Bara has better parts availibity and service.

I am using Fixit at moment. Its been bombproof in the very few miles I have done. Its quiet and strong and very good..... and is now FOR SALE

Another BIG problem is that you can select any gear and any time.....

You CAN very easily Buzz an engine with a Dog box.

Martin, Sean, Wes and a think Kev sharp all buzzed engines with dog boxes....

The chances of me not doing it are slim to none

Dog boxes are HORRID on the road, unless you are on it and attacking each gear change, it will crunch and might not go in, unless you are doing constant track work I personally would stick with a syncro box

The upside of the dog box is that when you are going for it, the change is very fast, Stu's data logging equiptment couln't pick up 4th-5th in 4x4_ste's 3 door, the one in last months fast ford

About 6k fitted
The only downside i see in this topic is that i live in denmark, and to get an skylne box fitted in the uk, would cost me like hell, and service is hell also
Have a friend that has used an r/d 6 speed dog box, and abused it for a long time now, still works sweet, but SHIT it´s noisy
Have bought some 15" M/T dragradials for my car now with some 15" superlegeras, but havent got the time to test them as i have sold my management system.
Should be fun to see what the driveline are gonna say to 550+bhp and full launch with those tyres on.(fixit std diffs)

you must have used some shitty dogboxes then as an ffd never crunches and always goes into gear.

non of my dog boxes have ever crunched going into gear, that is user error most of the time or a fooked box.

Everyone wants to knock the R+D,and yes their service does'nt have a great reputation, but i hav'nt seen many people beat Martin's 0-60 time with one fitted and i did'nt see many people pass Gallachers Focus at Croft.According to PF mag he's running R+D also.

R+D are sometimes are hit and miss

some of them last a long time some break quicker than others

scottys r+d broke doing standard start off the line so did Seans and Andrew broke his not so long ago so that statement is incorrect

to be honest all of the gearboxes will break at some point nothing lasts forever thats just motorsport

having them inspected does help to make them last longer that goes for any box

nothing is fit and forget .lol...

Im just looking into other options until Im ready to finish this. Whichever gearset I choose, will still be very sellable afterwards, when the Skyline box is fitted.

Obviously its not straightforward to fit one as you know....but I'll get there eventually
