we have been told that it will be a year before he will ever be able to try and walk again and he may never drive again.

20K+ Super Poster.
4 months is part time!!
I wish him a speedy recovery, doctors routinely paint the worst case scenario, so just see what happens.
I was knocked from my m/cycle and slammed into a oak tree at 30 mph, so I know what he is going through.
I spent 19 months in hospital, the first three in a coma, and was told I would never walk, or at best never unaided, I do and I go to the gym 4/5 times a week, got terrible arthritis as will your dad owing to fractures.
I had broken tib and fib left lower leg(4 breaks), both ankles, both femurs(4+3 breaks), broken pelvis(2 breaks) both hips dislocated, 3 ribs, sternum, 2 lumps missing from skull, lump missing off left side of brain, hole in top of brain, (brain damage), right humerous(2 breaks) right elbow shattered into pieces, which were picked out of tree but could not be used so have some spares!!
Tell your dad just to enjoy the nurses and bed baths!!, I know I did.
I was on a bike within three weeeks of getting out, on wasteland with me crutches, and had no physio at all.
Don't be surprised if his character changes, at least temporarily, depending on how bad/trauma he finds it.
Anyway wish him all the best from me.
