turbo sounds like normal, but i know the noise you mean

when i let off there is a bit of smoke on over run, but when on full chat it will fill a dual carriage way up

turbo can be checked simplely by checking up and down movement on the inlet fan of the turbo

just minimal play as you would get as ive checked

that would only tell me that the bearing is fine though

as its the smoking issue thats causing all my problems

see thats what i was thinking

but then i thought as the cylinders are being pressurised by the boost i thought that it could be the rings that have gone

but im more towards the turbo now will take it off and send it back for inspection on wednesday then

Dave

play in the shaft wont make it smoke
smoke is the oil getting past the rear seal and into exhaust system

but im more towards the turbo now will take it off and send it back for inspection on wednesday then
has the turbo been rebuilt recently?
will be under warranty then?
if it has, then the turbo should be right, and id look elsewhere first before sending it for inspection

how many miles has it done exactly since rebuild, and how long have you been driving it at a time....

it COULD just be oil in the ex system from last turbo if it was badly smoking before...

take it for a long run and see if it sorts itself out..

compression is 140 across all cylinders so i know the compression is ok but this doesnt show oil rings as i need a leak down test to do this and i havnt got the Ł60 at the mo to have it done

i was driving the car about i took the engine out of and just replaced the headgasket on it and bought some new stuff

carl
the car has been on the road just over a week

the orinal car was std rite down to teh exhaust and was running a t3

alls ive done is fitted a grp a gasket and put this new turbo on

i bleed the turbo up before firing the engine up, and ran itin for about 80 miles as i wanted to get used to the car again

after this the fuelling was checked and set and the boost increased to 25psi

couple of days later it started smoking really bad

and is just getting worse, ive done an oil change aswell and still no difference, breathers arnt block and everything is faultless bar this smoke,

and its costing me an arm and a leg in oil

then get it sent off for inspection, they will see straight away if its been leaking past rear seal

why its split, get them to fit a staggered rear seal
will help no end

I've just had exatly the same problem... fine on start up, fine on light loads, and normal driving. As soon as it's on boost huge clouds of smoke...
and only after i fitted a new bigger turbo..

I checked the turbo and all was well..

Then i pulled the head off and found nothing unusual..

Then i pulled the bottom end apart and found no.3 three oil control ring was broken.. And this was on an engine that had apparently just been rebuilt...

Hope yours isn't as expensive a job to repair!

Could well be rings mate, I hope for your sake its not though

My mates is nearly as bad as that and he changed his turbo and it made no difference.

Atleast you can have your turbo inspected for nout though

JonnyBravo

i do hope to god it is

its like that on over run aswell but disapperas

car is fine when not on boost, just starts to smoke when the turbo is just kicking in

if its not the turbo then im sure i can sort something out regarding an engine rebuild, and may aswell go more power or at least build it for more power for a later date
