Default Running in new engines........

Ive heard mixed opinions on running in new engines.

Some say its better to leave it about a 500-1000 miles before giving it some and others say if you give it some after a couple of hundred then it will be quicker later on.

So what IS the best way to do it?

Good idea for a thread, always interesting to see other peoples ideas.

What's the general opinion on this as well? http://www.mototuneusa.com/break_in_secrets.htm

if you want your engine to last run it in at 3-4 revs for 1st 500 miles then change oil at 500 for good oil. then when your hiting 800-1k miles drive it how your like but get it set up soonish

I run engines in like this..

Oil changes at 100, 500 and 1000 mile intervals since first fire up.

Drive it in different manners going up and down the gears and using full throttle but taking car not to rev it oo hard. Change the loading on the engine (drive down hills and up hills etc is a good way). I usually stick bellow 3.5k until is a few hundred mile old. Then I increase revs as the miles increase.

Better to use more revs than to labour the engine.
Running in is VIRTUALLY a thing of the past with better machined tolerances and above all else OILS, don't what ever you do use a decent oil for the first few thousand at least, especially fully synthetic, or you will glaze the bores.

Have heard so many different opinions on this and after running in my own engine (using fully synthetic) that iv come to the conclusion it doesnt really matter what you do unless you are really tearing the ar*e off it.

As Tabetha says tolorences and oils are so good nowadays running engines in is not the chore it used to be of old.

For the record, 5500k iv done with a top tuner saying it was a 'good un'.

i'll keep an eye on this Just rebuilding the engine in my starlet turbo.

have seen that motoman article, doesn't mention anything about turbo cars though, whether to run them in on the boost you intend to run or keep it low.

When I got my car it had under 10 miles on it and I drove out of fords and took it to the limiter. It's been driven like that ever since unless I have family in the car. It only had around 5,000 miles on it and I took it to a RR and I got 106.4bhp and 120ft/lb. There was a few other cars the same as mine that day which had bluefin, Decat, Exhaust, air filter and none of them made as much torque as me. Only one had about 2bhp more. It's now on 36,000 miles and has never let me down once.

if you bought your slr at ford and it's only got 106 brake, i'd be worried mate

we were told to keep the revs down a little and not to stress the engine to much for the first few hundred miles on a recently fitted new engine to one of your vito's, but it's a totlay new engine, new everything, inlet, turbo, exhaust, everything so i don't know if that would be the same if you were looking at a rebuilt lump

also, no need to get teh oil swapped as it's still gleaming after 2200 miles

What does that actually mean? I've heard it been mentioned before, but have no idea what glazing the bore actually means

you ned a small amount of ear in the mechanicals to bed them in properly

it's like the brakes, you bed them in and then they work their best, if you stamp on them they tend to fuck up and you won't get them to last as long or work as effieciently

simplest way to explain really but i'm sure soemone will techy you and explanation going itno the full details

500 miles on cheap oil

Change oil for more cheap stuff (usually 20-50 motor oil if for a cossie)

then after the next 500 miles (so now a totoal of 1000) change for your prefered oil choice ie mobil 1 etc and you're off

During this period don't go above 3000rpm and vary your driving style LOTS as Daz says up and down hills changing load on the car etc is good

After about 700 miles start giving a LITTLE bit of boost, little but often
