I've just ordered $570AUD (£227) worth of electronics stuff from Australia and it's quite likely I'll get stung for import tax but how much roughly ?

Not sure about tax and vat from australia but i had to pay VAT and 5% on a £150 exhaust from america, which worked out about £35. Still hundred quid cheaper than over here though. The % of import tax differs depending on what it is, but it'll only be around 5% i would have thought, then theres the VAT.

Depends exactly what it is.
TARIC tells you the rate, browse then follow the best description of the product until you get to the end of the listings sub headings, then click duty rates.

For example Digital camera is Zero import duty.
You may still get vat on top as well.
If there is no duty or vat there are no extra Fees to pay to the carrier,
I bought £300 of welding gear a couple of years ago, and didn't pay anything.
