Try and scare him away, lots of noise etc. He'll soon get tired and bugger off to another garden.
I don't think a cat would do the trick unless you're thinking of using a Puma or something bigger!!

Martyn,
You are SO lucky to have that in your garden . Especially as it frightens the fury rats . You also seem to be enjoying watching the hawk and are seeing stuff that very few people can or ever will . Sparrows are common as er, Sparrows .
As to the people advocating shooting such a beautiful bird - which is doing nothing but what nature designed it to do (eat and shit sparrows ), I imagine your IQ is lower than the aforementioned bird's .

Foos chain It is Illegal to kill them, because they are a bird of prey (last time I checked tho). Also there are proberly plenty of sparra's in those trees and the sparrowhawk is only keeping them at bay Its the same with mice and cats, and snakes and mice etc etc. Don't fuck with the food chain, cos if you do people like George W Bush are born Dumbass

Agree exactly with what Mike said I think its obvious you like birds to much to kill it anyway
maybe you could collect up any left over feathers, stick them to hamburgers and start feeding the sparrow hawk too

there are quite a few sparrowhawks here where i live and its not uncommon to see them crash into one of the bushes in the garden and emerge with a sparrow or blackbird. they have rather depleted the song thrush population however but thats how it goes. i have also seen them take pigeons from the top of next doors cabin [ he keeps pigeons ] although its only the females that do this as they are larger than the males. i have also witnessed them taking a variety of other prey aswell including moorhens. and at night we regularly see a pair of barn owls, and tawny come to the garden every night for mice.
