How much of an issue is it to most people if a car has had lots of owners or not?

In my opinion it doesn't providing you know what you're looking for on the car and is reflected in the asking price.

Reason i'm asking is cos i'm looking at a sapphire cosworth with 19 previous owners!!!

I think the reason it puts a lot off is that people tend to think WHY has it been passed around so much. Like when a cars a bag o spanners, and people get rid instead of throwing more money at it...then the next owner does etc...whereas the good cars usually get kept... I think it all depends on the age of car Vs how many owners it has had..

a thing i always think about is, if i buy a car with the thought of keeping it for say a year, i dont look after it much, service it much or really care about it much.

but if i buy a car to keep i look after it carefully and spend on it,

so if a car has had lots of owners who brought it and sold it fairly quickiy, id say it would be a fair assumption to say it wouldnt have been looked after aswell as a car thats been kept by one person

With RS's no it doesn't matter to me, the nature of the cars and their owners means that most aren't kept longer than a couple of years.

My 3dr has had 9 i think, in 21 years...i guess that's a lot but the plus point is every new owner tends to want to improve the car a bit more than the last

you can usually tell if it's a good car or not regardless of the owners.

some people dont even think about number of owners when they go to buy a car so why does it matter theyll only find out when its time to sign over the logbook, and that happens after the money is handed over

bing crosby aka cosworth rallysport aaka tim finchy broke my world
record with a escort cozzie that had 21 iirc, but he also had a metro
with 25 former keepers.

i reckon if a cozzie could talk it would have a pretty interesting story to
tell, don't forget some cozzies back in the day would have loads of owners
who did not put it in their name ie traders or main dealers etc

I personally won't go for a car with that many owners. I know there are good ones but if an owner is only intending to keep the car for 6 months they won't be doing all the little pampering things they would for a keeper.

This isn't the moonstone one at ABC is it?

dont think it really matters as long as the car is right

its a bit like this cossie has a full service history did anyone ever that episode of fools and horses with triggers broom with the exception of james's saff everyone ive seen has had different yb's fitted ,blocks/heads changed but they come with a full service history

i think the most important thing is that a car has been looked after right with whatever mods have been done

Cheers for the replies guys!

Yeah i agree on all the points raised about being looked after etc... it doesn't bother me but i'm worried about the sell-on factor (although this will be some way down the line cos it's a sub £2k jobbie needing engine and body work which may take a while)

the decision is whether it'll be worth it or not?!

No this is a private owner who can't afford to get the work done

imo it will never sell for top whack and you will be better off getting your money back by breaking it when it comes time to sell. but that's maybe not what you want to do? if you want a resto project just for the sake of doing the resto, then go for it, but i doubt that you'll be able to recover your costs, let alone make any thing out of it

I agree as said above by someone. If the cars had so many owners it would make me think there were times in it's life when it may not have been looked after service wise, just sold on.

Having said that though they are specialists cars now and you'd hope the last owner [or in this case possibly the last 10 owners ] have spent more time looking after it.

I would say receipts of whats been done recently and the overall condition of the car is more important.

Plus, if you changing the Log Book into our name actuallymakes it 20 previous owners, you can tippex out the Zero and add thousands to the value instantly!

The way i see it is ........

If you know your cars it dont matter as you can tell by looking/driving the thing.

If your semi-clued up it will have a bit of an influence (me).

If you knew nothing about cars at all id say it would have to be a major factor along with FSH

I guess it depends on the type of car you are looking for really, If its a daily runner then obviously it wouldnt matter that much.

two ways of looking at it 19 0wners who all bought it spent money on it made it better and all sold it
on the other hand 19 owners first one cared for it other 18 didn't give a shit used it abused it and sold it quick
Tough call each car on it's own merrits imo

My husband bought a rs1600i with 15 previous owner's got to admit i kept saying to him at the time why's it had so many owner's is there something we don't know about it lol , but it's got a full service history and every reciept since mid eighties , it's been a working class concour's car in the nineties and early 2000 was on all it's original panel's when we got her , we did have to have a bit of welding done but comcpared to most mk3 escort's she was pretty mint , now we have turned it into a proper concour's car with not much work really, and i would like to think if we sold her she would be a very sought after car

we also have a black 16i that's had 4 previous owner's and it's rotten as a pear with no history at all , so which one would you choose out of the two ?? concidering how rare a good 16i is

IMO its easier to prove the history of a low owner car.
Especially whenn you are able to make contact with them all!...

When I was looking for mine (5 years ago) it was important that it didnt have too many owners... When I got mine it was a "one previous"

Dunno how many mine has as I haven't got the log book yet and tbh I don't care...... it has a history folder going back to 1992 (it's a 1989 car) with receipts for things like bulbs and wiper blades all the way up to an engine build so someone must have loved her...lol

If the cars good then owners shouldnt matter aslong as its not 50 owners or ridiculously high. People seem to forget that some fords are rocking on over 20 years old now and people still consider 100k mile 3 door to be high mileage when average milage for it should be 250k

I wouldn't be bothered by the number of owners now because as time goes on, chances are it'll have more as it gets older. And I also believe that if Cossies could talk they'd have an awful lot to say - I'm sure mine has a few stories it would like to tell!

I always think, why has it had so many owners is it buggered.
Can anyone honestlyu say they have never bought a car nad had to spend money putting right other peoples bodges, I know I can't so always assume you are being told a pack of lies by the seller, and it is a shed that will need spending on!!
It would not put me off but I would expect more trouble with more owners and so not be willing to spend as much.
