Default Corsa check engine light

Been offered a T plate Corsa 1.2 SXi as a part ex on my Vectra, anyway lad brought it round today and I was already adamant I was gonna offer basement price for it.

He paid £600 for it just less than a year ago with a full MoT and 6 months tax etc, anyway MoT is down to 2 months now and its taxed til end of November. 95,000 on the clock but not much recent history so I was intent on not giving him much for it, spesh since one of the alloys needs a new tyre so it has a steel wheel on which would need doing before I can sell it on etc.

Anyway when he turned up today I took it for a run out, and at 50+ the Check engine light comes on. Anybody know what this means on a Corsa? Basically is the engine completely fucked?

I told the lad that with that light on id only give him £300 for it so he could take it or leave it, but if the engines gonna conk out anytime soon im inclined to just turn round and tell him to give me the £1200 cash for the Vec and no part ex.

Check light could be anything, usually something simple/cheap, a broken speedo cable will do it(on auto's) for example as mine did.
Why not read the code, does it drive ok ?

On most vauxhalls its normally grank or cam sensor. both cheap and easy to replace.
As above a simple code read will tell you

My daily runner astra engine management light comes on all the time, goes out again after a minute or so.........could it be the same kind of fault?

Speedo cable bust a while ago, and light would stay on.....but seemed fine after fitting a new cable.

Oh, its a gutt-less 1.2 16v ecotec engine if that makes any difference!!
