CAT A WRITE OFF, BUT STILL ON THE ROAD??
A friend of mine owns a S2, only had it a few months as bought cheap with no MOT, it now as 11 mot on it, but we did an HPI check on it tonight and the report says, "DAMAGE CATEGORY A ON 22-07-99 IT SHOULD BE TOTALLY CRUSHED AND IS OF VALUE ONLY FOR SCRAP METAL"
what i don't get is how this is/was still on the road, why was it allowed back on the road although it's saying should have be crushed??
any info??

was it sold and intended for parts use only i would guess someone from a scrappy was offered a goof price for it? or a recovery yard may have sold it on for a quick back hander but even then the ID should have been removed to avoid any trace on the car?
so whats made the car a CAT A then? has someone died in it, has it been in a robbery? usually seriously damaged cars are CAT A, or ones that have been involved in serious crimes (terrorism, robberies, kidnaps and the likes etc etc) if an RST was one, no one would bother repairing it!!!!!

Category D
The least damage suffered of the four categories e.g. vehicles replaced under 'new for old' schemes, vehicles written-off to minimise hire charges.
The vehicle can be safely and economically repaired either by the insurer / motor trade or by an enthusiast using cheaper parts and reduced labour costs.
Note: the following was amended in the 2001 code of practice for the disposal of motor salvage, a pdf copy of which can be viewed by clicking here
The PAV (Pre Accident Value) does not exceed Ł2,000 (Ł1,000 for motorcycles), or for more expensive vehicles, where the engineer's assessed repair costs do not exceed the PAV.
Category C
Substantial damage, but repairable by an repairer or enthusiast.

Category B
Heavy damage e.g. bent chassis
The vehicle cannot be safely and economically repaired either by the insurer / motor trade or by an enthusiast using cheaper parts and reduced labour costs. However, the vehicle contains economically salvageable parts.
Category A
A 'total loss' e.g. burn-out. The only value is the scrap metal.

Do the chassis numebrs on hpi / the car tally?
You can carry a number plate over to a new shell if you have enough 'points' worth of other stuff, i.e. entire running gear....

LOL ' the 'go to the police station NOW' comments.
ok then, i'll just take a car thats had loads of money and time spent on it to the coppers who'll take it off me.
great.
if i were you i'd strip it for parts.
"but THATS DODGY!!"
so you'd be willing to hand a car over and lose it after spending money on it? dont think so. strip it, make what you can.

It's more down to the assessors really - the monkeys that 'assessed' my Saff after its little incident were ready to write it off, until we cancelled the claim to repair it. Even then after a fortnight of arguing, the obstinate sods said "We'll give you Ł500 for it", to which my reply revolved around "my hairy apes". Later it turned out that some of the staff there did it regularly - write it off, make a cash offer and hope the owner goes away so he could strip it for parts or fix it and sell it on. It was perfectly repairable - seens as I'm still driving it.

All you mongs that are presuming it's a ringer make me laugh, it was probably made cat A for whatever reason and then got sold on by the salvage company to a mate for spares (or something like that) and then that guy put it on the road... Once a car catergorised car has been sold on to a new owner then there is nothing the authorities can do to stop the owner putting it on the road (as long as it's roadworthy!!)

checking back through the history we now think it was fire damage.

Interesting...
You see... Legend has it....
A few years ago I was offered a merc grey rst that had been 100% reshelled... I was told due to rot.. in 1999.
I didn't have the funds and passed it on to a friend...
Enter Tricky Dicky...
Who went and had it - Hpi'd it to find it was in fact on the hit list as FIRE DAMAGE 1999.... but it had the vin number scratched into the floor.
He paid peanuts for it, sold it on and the last I heard it was certainly over that there neck of the woods...
The shell was mint everything else a bit oooo eeeerrrr
Hence why I asked as it sounded familiar..
I guessed at an E plate but could' ve been owt..
Is the paint job really shit.. ?
