As Stu says, DIY is half the fun of owning the car
It would be to easy to pop down to the local rolling road have it tuned and away you go the only problem with that is if you then make any changes to the engine, cam, head, exhaust, filter, turbo, or any think else to do with the engine, back down to the rolling road you must go If Stu is anything like me the engine spec is in a constant state of flux, as things get swapped around and changed in the never ending quest for more power
It’s quite nice when you do visit a rolling road and things are about right

Cheers

also, the airflow over the intercooler at full boost in 4th/5th cannot be replicated on a rolling road. as the charge air is cooled on the road more than on the rollers, you are getting a denser charge - hence more air into the engine. if you set the fuelling up on the rolling road, it's possible that at full chat you will have a lean (or at least not rich enough enough) mixture leading to meltdown (hence why an egt sensor (or 4 ) is a also a good idea.

I just ordered a set for my Escort as well. The grand total was 227€ including shipping, controller, cable, connectors, sensor and display. Only VAT left to pay.

It's a wicked kit especially with MS as the management can run on constant closed loop everywhere in the map. One just needs to define the targer AFRs at different map areas. Let's see for how long till it's constant closed loop for ignition timing as well

BTT

My Wideband and logging equip will be here soon. Looking forward to see how far i can go with KE and mappable 5th. Think time is the key. Will back off the std pressure and try and get as close to 15:1 at crusie, then use the MAP sensor and MF2 to get 12:1 on full boost

You should be able to get around 14:1 with KE with out much of a problem at cruise
Much leaner than that and the car does not drive too well at part throttle
Good luck

This is the best thread I have seen on this board ever and just where I want to go and why I bought my escort - ie so I could do the work on it and not have to take it to a tuner.

However I think you boys are a bit more advanced than me and I would love to get some advice, I currently have a chipped s2 but is running little or no boost. i am confident in setting up the boost and ignition but am unsure how to adjust the fuelling to match?? what can I use to test and how do I avoid it going boom? I think it will take me some time to get to the knowledge you have but this is my hobby and what I want to learn? the problem is there is no school or night course so how do you learn ??

Any help anyone can give me on basic setting up and then going forward would be much appreciated - and any explanations in lehmans would be good

Thanks

Trev

You probably dont have access to the technical essays forum then? This one is destined for there actually.

It's all from practice and experience. Stu & Karl have taught me everything i know specific to setting up cars, and for that i am very grateful.

It's not just about having the equipment, but an intimate knowledge of the cars fuel and ignition system is needed. I'd never attempt to set anything up other than an erst - leave that to stu. Don;t forget, get it slightly wrong, and it gets very expensive...

Good to see this thread is still alive! - had my tech edge for over a year now and its still working fine - top bit of kit IMO and cheap if your willing to make the kit up yourself. I havent done anything with my car for some months now as Ive been too busy with other stuff but shes still running fine and haveing the tech edge there gives me confidence that all is still well with the AFR .

If your careful and not too greedy (i.e. back off a bit to maintain reliability) I think DIY can be great fun and very satisfying.

Happy xmas all

Stu

I agree. Even if you are not confident enough or don't own the right kit to put it into practice on your car. You will at least be able to recognise a bullshit tuner who doesn't have a clue when it comes to finding someone to set your car up.

There are some very good tuners on here, but believe me, some of the monkeys that i have seen make me feel very sorry for any young chap, keen for a bit more go that might rock up on their doorstep!

Surprised to see this old topic resurrected. Also my setup has slightyl changed from last time. Now MS has a built in autolearn feature making tuning dead easy for all those with WB-02 sensors. One just needs to specify a target AFR map like this:

I also wired a knock sensing module to the ecu:

It automatically blinks a blue led that I've hidden next to the RPM-meter in the instrument cluster, richens the mixture, retards the advance and makes a mark in the datalog.
Also the FSE "Åmål" valve can easily be programmed now with the MS to get a desired boost curve for varying throttle settings.
Feels like tuning is getting really easy nowadays
